Car detailing has come a long way.

PA DETAILER

DETAILED TODAY?
It just overwhelms me the choices of car care products that are available today! Guess I am getting OLD. Back in the day you had a few choices of wax and tire products. Now you have a staggering choice of wax, coatings, tire protectants, etc... List never ends and keeps growing daily. For a newbie this has to cause several hours of looking and researching what to buy!! Tell you tho, times are good.

I`m with you on this ... it takes me DAYS to decide what I want to finally get for my cars.

The best thing is that it is hard to make a bad choice. The difference between the high end products and the low end products are very small. It usually comes down to what I am most familiar with or if I want to try something new, but everything now is almost foolproof. Car maintenance has never been easier.

Agree 100%. Like Mike Phillips says the abrasive/polish technology is the most important aspect of polishing. Seems the chemical engineering of all detailing products has really gotten so good the last 5-10 years. Plus when you read enough threads, reviews, and see photos of the results, you have a fairly good idea if you are going to have success with a product before it reaches your doorstep.

Products and equipment have come a long way, but I sometimes wonder about techniques (especially wash-related), if only because there`s still so much emphasis on correction.

The biggest difference I`ve seen in the short time I`ve been in the detailing biz is the performance to price gap. It seems like great products are getting cheaper and cheaper. I remember when the saying "you get what you pay for" was actually true, now you can get awesome stuff at a low budget. Gotta love competition!

Despite the number of highly-motivated people who try their best to keep their cars immaculate, there is an even greater number of clueless who depend on us (if they care even a little bit) to bring them back to life after years of tunnel washes and improper hand washings. So I would say that (among the `faithful`) washing technique has improved. but among the uninitiated ....

Don- Guess I was thinking primarily about non-Pros of the sort who are members here or at least "serious enthusiasts". The car-guys I know are still marring up their stuff something awful and acting like it`s unavoidable and/or no big deal.

Also thinking of dealerships, who are still damaging stuff the way they`ve done since forever. Even if the customers don`t care, the dealership people oughta know better.

That`s a great point you brought up, how there are more people paying Pros to do their vehicles. The Detail Shop in my area seems to do a lotta business, not that I`d let them [do what they do...sigh, why don`t they do better?!?] to anything of mine if I could help it.

You have a point, there are hacks and people who mean well, but still don`t do it "right."

Maybe I oughta dial back my criticism of how the Dealerships are doing, just got a Q5 service loaner and it has less marring than I used to see in their showroom.

On "people who mean well.." I shudder to think about all the clearcoat failure that might happen now that really aggressive compounds are so user-friendly and commonly available. "Got marring? Just a quick buff with M101..." Used to be that taking off a lot of clear was simply not gonna happen very often (without a rotary).
