Hi all!

I was wondering if I could grab your help in telling me what this corrosion/buildup is on my rims and what I can use, if anything, to repair it.

Thanks!

Ken

Looks like oxidation/corrosion of the aluminum from underneath the clear coat. This can be caused by slight "holes" in the clear that allow caustic wheel cleaners/brake dust to penetrate, or because of the porosity of the aluminum. Either ways, sadly, it cannot be fixed. The clear has to be stripped and the wheel refinished...

Thats unfortunate. Thanks for the replies all. Any idea how much it is to refinish or is it just better to buy new wheels?

Don't know where you are, but in CT/MA there is a company called
Alloy Wheel Repair, so I'm sure there are similar all over the country. Give it a google shot. Or call a dealership and ask the service writer who they use. They will usually tell you

Pretty cheap to refinish rims ...think something around $75 bucks around here in NY

Talk to some reputable body shops in your area and they can tell you who they use to resurface rims

I have used an Alloy Wheels Repair facility in Washington and they were fabulous !
Always made badly damaged, scraped, etc., wheels perfect again...
You could never tell where the original damage was - they were that good..

The cost to refinish all 4 of your wheels will almost always be a little less or right at the cost for 1 new medium grade wheel... Its a win-win... :)
Good luck with this..

Thanks for all the replies guys. I talked to a friend of mine yesterday and he's gonna help me sandblast them and paint. Should be fun. I'll post pics. :)
