Hi, I've got an 04 mustang mach1, clearcoated alum. wheels, with badly caked on brakedust. A mcguires guy told me to try swirlX, didn't touch it. I've tried clay bar, will work, but will take hours per wheel, anybody got any ideas what will work without harming the clearcoat? Thanks in advance, Joe

If its really clearcoated you could try a strong concentration of megs wheel brightner.

It might have etched its way in though

you could try mr clean magic eraser just use plenty of water and do a spot and completly dry it to check for scratches Iv used it many times on wheels and never had any problems

Some people have had really good luck with P21S Wheel Gel. Spray on and let it sit, it's safe for all wheel finishes.

For baked-on brake dust like this:

I use one of those small steamer units:

Now I only do this to break the upper "crust" so to speak. It seems that once the steam loosens the top-most layer of dust, you can then use some wheel cleaner and a brush to get the rest off.

The example wheel above came off my 22 year old Benz and it was obvious that the previous owner had never cleaned the backs of the wheels. These were really hard to get clean.

The steam had no effect on the finish of the wheel, but like anything else, use steam in moderation. I would not steam clean a wheel every time - only in extreme cases.

Why would a Mguiars guy tell you to use ScratchX on brake dust?

Use a good acidic wheel cleaner per their directions and you'll be happy.
