Buying PC 7424

I'm planning to buy PC 7424 having read everyone's positive experience with it. Does it come with good enough pads for swirl mark removal, polish, and buffing? Or should I buy additional pads? I'm planning on using SSR1, EX-P, UPP, Natty's Wax, UPC.

Thanks.

Get out the credit card bubba......

If it does come with any pads....THROW THEM AWAY.

I like the Lake Country VC 7.5". Whichever pads you go with get at least two polishing and one cutting. For removal, I like using a LC black pad with a bonnet....which you will need a half dozen.

Have Fun

I have been using the Edge 2k system from PAC.
The are double sided and use the new quick connect system.
Both are great.
When the pad starts to gum up with product, I turn it over to a clean side.
If you haven't bought your PC yet, you can get them with your pad's from:

Is the Edge 2K w/ Quick Connect better or the regular Edge DA Foam pads?

If I purchase the latter, do I have to buy the Edge 5inch velcro backing plate? Or does the PC come with a backing plate I can use for the Edge foam pads?

keeping in mind that we are the manufacturer, it is my personal opinion that the new Edge2000 system is not only the best system around but is the future attaching system for all buffing pads. This system will allow and operator to automatically center the pad, eliminate the backing plate which can strike the paint, use both sides of the pad, switch between pad sizes and between the rotary and DA without changing a backing plate, and it costs less than two single sided pads. That being said if you choose the velcro style single sided Edge DA pad the velcro plate the comes with the PC will attach the pad just fine.

I don't think the 7424 comes with a velcro backing plate. See this thread for detailed information about PC usage and accessories - Porter Cable Tutorials . It contains a wealth of information.

As for the E2K quick connect pads versus the Edge velcro backed pads, it's all a matter of preference. If you like to switch between different manufacturer's pads, then the velcro system would be more convenient. If you already have some velcro pads and the backing plate, it may be more cost effective to continue with a velcro system. If you like to use the same pads with a rotary buffer and a dual action polisher, then the E2K's automatic centering system may be very useful. The shapes of the velcro pads and E2K pads are also slightly different. The E2K pad is thicker overall, has rounded edges, and has 2 sides which can be used for buffing. You can also request custom pads with different textures on each side. The Edge velcro pad has a thinner profile, so it can fit into smaller spaces a little more easily than the E2K setup. The velcro pad also has blunt cut edges which give you more flat polishing surface but is more difficult to use over transitional body panels (hood scoops, fender flares, etc.).

There is no "best" pad for the PC. As with most detailing supplies, it all comes down to each user's individual preferences.

Both of the above posts are correct.
I believe the style of the edge 2k system is an advance in technology.
However, as Marg said if you already have velcro it would be expensive to upgrade.
I recently used the 2k system on my son's car.
I was using PB ssr2.5 with a polishing pad and picked up some dirt from the sunroof surround. The pad had a black mark on it I thought shouldn't touch paint.
With a push of a little button the pad pops off, I turned it over and click.
Brand new, clean side centered and ready to go.
I finished the car with that side.
Then to switch products (ssr1), same thing push, click, now the finishing pad has 2 sides available to apply the ssr1.
I have never used the velcro pads, but I love the ease of this 2k system.
If someone were starting from scratch (like I was), I would personally reccomend the 2k system.
But Marge gave you the pros of other products as well.
You ultimately need to decide what is best for you.
Good luck!
:)

ps. Aaron: terrific product. Thanks!

Thanks for sharing your experience and opinions. I'm ready to purchase PC 7424 now. BTW, I just read the PC tutorial, it suggested having it lubricated on a yearly basis. Do you guys really do that? I'm overseas and we don't have PC service center her.

I don't have my PC serviced, but I'm not a high volume detailer. I'm just a hobbyist who details a few cars here and there out of my own home. I've had my PC for over 2 years with no problems so far.

You might want to contact geminigsr. He is not having a good experience with his PC and wants to get rid of it. Might be a good thing for both of you. :dunno

Re: Frustration kicks in, no luck with PC.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I give up.

Instead of going around the whole car I narrowed it down to one panel (trunk)

I saw little to no improvement after DACP on polish pad for multiple passes, worked it in real good at 5-6...... then did #80 speed glaze, same results, LOTSA hazing in direct sunlight..

I even tried going back to DACP on the cutting pad and worked it till dust then went over DACP with polish and finally speed glaze and NOTHING!!!

So screw it :P - I'm going to sell everything I purchased which is well over $200.00 to have the money to HOPEFULLY find a capable detailer to fix what was already on my car and what I possibly might have added.

So if ne1 is interested..

Porter Cable 7424 w/ Velcro backing plate...

2 Meg's Polish Pad's
2 Meg's Cutting Pad's
about 15 microfiber towels..
Half DACP of the smaller bottle
1 quart of MEg's #80 speed glaze

The pads and porter cable have been used a total of 3-4x... towels, once..

Hopefully I'm not breaking rules by posting this but if I can get $150.00 for everything listed which would be just enough money to pay the proper detailer to fix my car... I'd be happy..

Edge pads are good, not up to speed on this new double-sided easy-switch upgrade thing, but I also recommend the SONUS pads.

Might pay to have 2 sets.

Thanks Edge, have your pads too besides SONUS, saving them for MY car, once I get good enough with the PC. lol

What about the lake country pads, with the thick green german pad for polishing...looks great. And then the orange pad for cutting. How do you guys feel about that line of HiGloss products....

Carl

Edge,

I use a terry bonnet for wax/sealant removal. I put it over a finishing pad - just because they are softer.

I would buy the 7336 if you plan on using the edge 2000 quick connect system. The 7336 has the 6 oz. counter weight with it already and to allow minimal vibration and better balance with the use of the edge 2000 pads.

IF YOU BUY THE 7424 YOU SHOULD CONSIDER BUYING THE 6 oz COUNTER WEIGHT ACCESSORY TOO IF YOU PLAN ON USING THE EDGE 2000 PADS. CALL DWYANE AT PAC. HE CAN EXPLAIN. PLUS, BUYING FROM HIM YOU GET 10% OFF, FREE SHIPPING WITH ANY ORDER OVER $125 AND YOU ARE SUPPORTING HIS SITE THROUGH YOUR PURCHASE!
