Wusup yall, I'm in Georgia and i need help on taking the first steps towards legitimizing my business as far as where to go to get licensed and insured, and do i get my name copyrighted or trademarked??? My shop names are Aaron's Auto Appearance, Deshawn's Auto Detailing (D.A.D), or simply, The Shop. One of the three will be chosen. I'm open to any type of criticizm.... i know it's a long shot but i need help:) even vote on what shop name i should choose :thx

Well this all depends on state law's honestly. Here in New York you need to file a DBA, or Doing business under assumed name. You go to your local town clerk, check to see if your name is in use, if its not you then buy it. Its a $35 fee here. Again though this is by state law. Insurance also depends on your state law, your best bet is to call an insurance agency who can shop your rates. You will pay some high prices just because you are a new business. Most policies are about 1 Million and higher in coverage, and cost depends on your risk factor. The first two names you have are to long, the third is too short. Look around at some other names here and get an idea of what most go with.

You should have a local Tax Office:

georgia.gov - LicensingGeorgia Tax Information

You will want to go to Business Registration.

Insurance will be as easy as calling a couple insurance brokers to see what they have to offer. They will ask you some questions to find out what type of coverage you need.

You can also register your name (at least here we can) so that nobody else can use it.

I hope that helps a little bit.
