Bug Guard

Ok, I've put three coats of this on the car now, but haven't driven it yet.

This stuff is like putting hair gel on your car. It's very thick and goopy, and I can't imagine how you could just spray it on. I used a foam pad and it goes on fine. It smells alright, sort of a fresh scent.

I can see it on the sides of the fender and the front of the hood where I only applied it to part of the panel. Areas where I applied it to the whole panel, like the entire front of the car and the side mirrors, it's harder to see it. Maybe I won't do the front edge of the hood and fender next time.

Where you can see it clearly, it looks a bit like wax or something that didn't get buffed of right. It's fairly noticeable.

I'll let you know how it fairs against bugs, and see if it ruins the beading of the wax underneath. :)

That description sure sounds how mine looks. Yes, I definitely will apply it with a foam pad next time, this will save product too. I'm very curious to see, once I rinse it off, if it strips the sealant from my paint. I suppose I can determine this if I mist the area with water and it still beads

Update

Ok, I had the BG on for about a month so it's time to wash it off. I did so using Duragloss car wash: wow, how slick and it really cleans! This appears to be the best OTC shampoo I've used yet! :up I noticed in a tiny spot or two the BG caked up, sorta like dried nail polish, there was absolutely no harm to the paint and upon complete drying, I tested for evidence of SG remaining on the paint. I sprayed water on the front bumper and it beaded up very nicely so I assume the BG did not effect the SG. For good measure, I applied another coat any way.

Next time I'm definitely applying this stuff with a foam pad.

Cool, thanks for the update. But, did the bugs all come off?? :) I'm going to wash my car this weekend, and I'll probably try the QEW way. I'm curious if this will be enough to get it off. My car isn't super buggy, but there is one big bug guts splat and a few smaller bugs, so I would like to see if they just wipe away.

There weren't any bugs to begin with :nixweiss. Guess I paid to have the bugs stay out of my path :D. I'll be testing it some more.

Well, bugs didn't stay out of my path. In fact, it was so cool and nice out today, my wife and I went out and racked up a lot more bugs. I used QEW, and it worked very well. All the bugs came off with little effort. It just takes a bit of time for the Bug Guard to fully dissolve. So I would wipe BG'd parts first, go over the rest of that area, then come back and wipe the BG'd part again for mirrors and the edge of the hood/fenders. For the front bumper, I went over the whole thing with a very wet mitt, then rinsed the mitt out again without drying the panel and went over it all again.

At first the panel seems to not bead water, but after the second pass as you get all the Bug Guard off, the QEW is beading up again just like other panels, so I think the #16 was just fine under it. The bugs came off as easily as the Bug Guard did. Once it broke down from the water, it all just wiped right off. :bigups

The car did get misted on on Friday, and while you could barely see water spots on the rest of the car, the BG part looked really spotty and horrible. So I guess if it's gonna rain, better to really pour and get all the BG off.

I'm really happy with how it has worked, and how easily it is to remove. Definitely a keeper product. So if I had a show car, I could toss a bucket, some gallons of water, and some QEW in the trunk, Bug Guard the front, and wash the car when I got there. Then BG it up about 30 minutes before I left and go home. :up

The only possible thing that could be improved is the appearance of the Bug Guard on the paint, but really it isn't that noticeable.

Hey Bill, how did you manage to spray it anyway? Did you buy it in the spray bottle? I bought the gallon, and the sprayer I put it in was totally unable to mist this stuff. It came out in globs...

Aurora,

Yeah I can get it locally in the spray bottle size only. The more I may need this product I'll just order the gallon from PRO directly :up

Thanks for the reviews guys. I'm gonna give BG a try myself, its "bug city" down here in SC and I need all the help I can get!

Later ..

Hmm. My new daily commute consists of about 45 miles of highway driving each way.. Through cornfields and such. LOTS of bugs. Working second shift, I get home in the middle of the night and the last thing I want to do is deal with bug splatter! And bugs seem really attracted to headlights as I barrel down the highway at night time. So Bug Guard sounds interesting. Couple questions..

Sounds like this stuff protects the paint from the bugs and makes them easier to wash off? And (helps) prevent the bugs from etching the pain? One time use -- gotta reapply every time you wash or after a rain storm?

I might try this. In the summer I don't worry much about bugs or rocks bc I am careful where I drive car#1, and I usually will have a lot of wax on the car. In the winter, when I drive on a certain highway (which is near the coastline of the atlantic, with beaches etc.) it seems like the bugs and rocks hit harder. I couldn't believe the rock chips I got one month during the winter when I made about two trips out to this place. It drove me crazy.

I was looking for a temporary guard against road hazards without going the route of having a transparent film put on (I will NEVER do that). The bra works good for long trips, but try putting that thing on everyday....

I doubt BG can really do much to help prevent stone chips. I'm pretty ure it can prevent etching from bug guts. If you're lucky enough not have any or few bugs you can keep it on the paint for up to 30 days.

Yup, that's exactly what it does. :)

As far as rock chips, it says it can help with them. It does seem dubious, but I guess it can't hurt. It says Bug Guard goes on 7-10 mils thick. Xpel film is 8 mils thick. But of course it is 8 mils of plastic, not 8 mils of hair gel... You can put BG on pretty thick, though. It seems to get more noticeable, but I suspect you could really glop it on there if you wanted. That might help with rock chips. :nixweiss

I tend to think not really, a gel is a much softer surface than say a vinyl bra or that clear bra Scotchcal material. Maybe it could help prevent those pin hole size chips but I would think that would be about it :nixweiss

FWIW, here's a picture of the Bug Guard on the car. I wanted to take another with the sun on it, but it didn't happen. The BG is on the lower panel, and not on the upper. You really can't see it unless it's in the sun, or you really scrutinize it and get the angle just right. In the sun it's fairly easy to see if you are right by the car, but isn't really hideous or anything.
