brake dust

I drive a 2002 bmw 745I. I love to shampoo and polish my ride but I have a problem with brake dust on my rims. I can wash them today and in 2 days they will look like they were not washed. I've been told that it's time to change my brake pads but the dealer said thats not the case. He said it's the type of rims I have (factory rims for now). Someone told me to get ceramic brakes another said its a product out there that helps prevent the dust from sticking to the rims. Can anyone help me with this problem.

BMWs are notorious for throwing a lot of brake dust. Don't think there's anything you can do to reduce it, but keeping your wheels waxed will help with the removal.

Try using a sealant on your wheels, too, like Klasse SG. I did this to my vehicles, and have since been following up with Michelin BD Repellent. It now takes a longer time for the wheels to get dirty, and when they do, I can remove 85+% of the BD by just rinsing the wheels with a hose. The rest easily come off with an application of a gentle wheel cleaner followed by *very* light sponge agitation. It used to take me 20+ minutes per wheel on my SRX (which has incredibly bad wheels insofar as BD seems to adhere to them); now I'm down to about 10 minutes per wheel. I work slow, too. :)

Look for Axxis Deluxe brake pads. From what I've heard (haven't used them myself, planning on it for the next brake job though), they're supposed to have slightly less grip than OEM brakes but less than 50% of the brake dust.

Check out Wheel Wax.

The 350Z has high dust brake as well and Wheel Wax is one of the more prefered products.

I called the BMW dealer to find out if replacing my pads with ceramic pads woud effect my warranty, the response was you should only use BMW brakes. What kind of asnwer is that?

that is a "we don't know *** you are talking about, so we will say anything to get you to bring your car here so we can charge you 800+ for rotors and pads, then 120 per hour for shop labor. Yes your brakes will still dust."

Technically using a specific product over an OEM product can't void your warrantee unless the dealer/manufacter is willing to give you the part for free.

It's the law, it is sometimes uphold, but it is the law...

Michilin (sp?) makes a brake dust repellant. I tested it and I got good results. But I think a sealant, as someone has posted before, may work better?

LOL i know somebody didn't just recommend Axxis & Hawk pads for less brake dust! Don't believe everything the boxes say! Porterfields are amazing for performance but I dunno about them for low brake dust

Don't worry about voiding your warranty, as someone said before, brake pads are considered maintenance products so you have to change them anyway. And no they wont blame your brake pads for when your windows stop working.

Changing brake pads will definitely help with your brake dust problems. I would recommend going with EBC Redstuff Ceramics (CRUCIAL TO GET THE CERAMIC VERSION, old Redstuff & EBC are bad). You get low dust, low noise, and great performance for your BMW. Too bad I doubt they make'em for your car.

As others have said, replace the factory pads with ones that don't generate as much dust.

BTW, I have recently started to use Megs Wheel Brightener on my powder coated wheels and notice that brake dust sticks much less.
