Bon Ami cakes

Big Leegr

Swirls?!?! NNOOOOOOO!!!!!
For those of you old enough to remember these (or if you are in the window/glass business):

I saw that for a limited time the Bon Ami company has released a limited run of 125th anniversary polishing cakes.

From my own experience, these things can last a loooong time. Plus, being in cake form, they are easily transportable.

Anyways, for those who are unfamiliar with this product, it used to be a popular glass cleaning item.

So, for those of you that are nostalgic, or for those that are inquisitive, they are available for a limited time through the Bon Ami store as well as through some Ace Hardware stores. Not overly cheap, but a good value for glass cleaning.

as an old time i certainly remember them. they work incredibly well. i am hunting for my local ace hardware as we speak. next thing will be glass wax in the pink can.

Ah yes, pink can Glass Wax. It can tackle some difficult hazing and smudging. But is it still around?

I had completely forgotten about this product. It does work very well. I guess I'm showing my years by acknowledging that I remember this product. ;)

It's basically the Bon Ami powder pressed into a cake. The benefit is that you can carry the cake, get your water on location and rub the cake on your cloth or sponge and get to cleaning. It's claim to fame is that it would not scratch, it really was quite gentle. You could really get a lot of mileage out of one bar. It's one of those "Old School" things that just worked.

I liked to keep one in the trunk, along with a bug sponge (I always had a detailing survival pack) when I traveled to clean the windshield. You can get water most anywhere and it cleaned better than anything they had placed by the pump. I used to pick these up at the grocery store but haven't seen them in a long time.

Just saw the price on these. http://www.bonami.net/Bon-Ami-Cleaning-Cake-125th-Anniversary-p/08206.htm Here's the part that shows my age. I remember buying these for a buck and a quarter. You could pick up 5 lbs. of Boraxo hand cleaner for the same price. ;)

Nope. It's too high in the VOC department.

From what I've seen, old cans sell fairly high priced on ebay, as it's prized by doll collectors for cleaning porcelain faces.

They stopped making the cakes a while ago because they cost too much in labor-still cut them by hand with piano wire, they said.
I also see that they've limited the production to 1,886 bars (to match the year of founding) so it really is a limited edition!

I remember them less than that. :notme:

I also have a shaker can of Boraxo hand cleaner "just for to have." From what I've read, it's the same as what's in a box of Boraxo (or at least, it was) so a person could just pour some from a box into a shaker can and use it that way, if one were so inclined.

I do too, don't tell me they've stopped making these. Mine is still about half full. I buy the big boxes and have a powder dispenser above my work sink. A meduim nylon bristle brush and Boraxo is "the best" (and I've tried them all) to remove grease from hands and nails without doing too much damage.

Here's a link from Dial: Heavy Duty Hand Cleaners

They apparently make a few variations of it, including a bar soap! (not that I'll likely come across it myself...) I see that you can get a couple types of boxed Boraxo shipped free to store through Ace Hardware (Wow! Ace really IS the place! :lol2: )

There's a line out of "The Ghost and Mr. Chicken" that one of the old ladies says at least twice that '"they even used BonAmi" when talking about old blood stains on organ keys. It won't even scratch ivory.

I wasn't born for another 20 years lol

I never heard of this stuff until this thread and it really does make me want to at least try it once.
