BMW Paint

So today I detailed an 02 blue BMW 540i and while doing my correction I realized that it needed two hits of 3m rubbing compound to get it 95% clear. I did take pictures but my befores aren't that great, but maybe I'll post em later. Anyway, tomorrow I am scheduled to work on an 07 BMW 335 hard top convertible and I was wondering how hard that paint is? Is it equally hard as the 540 paint of softer? :think2

I've always found BMW paint to be on the softer side.

Depends if its metallic paint or non-metallic. My non-metallic Jet Black BMW has a reputation of being soft, AFAIK.

Paint hardness varies by color and year.

Yeah, it varies. The clear on my '97 is harder than that on my Audis.

Jet black (non metalic) is soft.

Black saphire (metalic) is hard.

My 97 e39 540 is black and it's very hard. I had to use 3m rubbing compound as well.

As a general rule of thumb their solid colors are softer than their metallics.



I've noticed their metallics take much more agressive measures to remove defects than the solid colors, FWIW.
