BMW defect...strange one

Hi Folks,

I'm in need of your thoughts regarding a weird defect on a 2007 BMW 335i convertible I picked up a week or so ago. After washing, claying, and compound / polish / wax (by hand - ugh) I've become more familiar with the car and most notably it has an "acid etch" looking streak on the hood. Bummer.

It's not nearly as noticeable as the pics below would indicate, except for the fact that I'm not looking for it all the time. Any thoughts? It's not a scratch and appears to be "under" the clear. Never seen this before and would appreciate any assistance. Not sure this one will go away. :frown1:

Well right off the bat, it looks like the car probably had a clear bra on it at one time? Appears that some sort of chemical ran down the hood and along where the film ended, if I had to guess.

Especially depending on what you used to compound/polish, working by hand probably isn't aggressive enough to cut through that etching, assuming it can even be cut through safely. Might want to consult a pro or pick up a DA for yourself and give that a go. Where in Florida are you located?

Charlie, thanks for the response. Agreed the car had a clear bra on it as there is a very obvious indication of this on the hood and the front end in general is in quite good shape for a 40k mile car. I also would guess that something ran down the hood and etched - what I have no idea but it needs something stronger than an attack "by hand".

I'm new to Florida - the Orlando area - and still have a bunch of stuff in storage in Indiana (including a DA) that needs to make its way down here sooner rather than later.

If there's any folks out there close to Orlando that might be willing to take a look I'd be appreciative.

Thanks again Charlie!

Hard to tell exactly what is going on with these pictures, but I'd hit it with your DA with a polishing compound and see how it clears it up.

Or, hire a local FL detailer (Garry Dean) to stop by and take care of this for you. :)
