BMW $800 "polymer coating".....

So I just talked to my brother-in-law. His neighbor just bought a BMW and paid $800 to have them coat it with some polymer that "goes on aircraft to prevent dirt from sticking". They put it on the rims and everything and gave him a 10 year guarantee of no scratches and no "un-removable dirt".

Has anyone else heard about this? I can't stand how dealerships can get away with stuff like this.

All the money that I spend on products, I would think my stuff is better than dealership products. Wish I could charge $800 to put something like Cquartz on a car.

Thanks

Well, we all know these coatings are nonsense. But the 10 year scratch-free guarantee would have me digging into the fine print.

They're selling you a paint protection warranty... not really the product. If you really think about it, how many people do you think cash in on that warranty compared to how many people buy it??? Its a big money maker!!!

Warranty will require re-application (which no one ever goes back for), there will be a slew of caveats with regard to the no scratch/dirt part of the warranty. It's just a straight up sealant, pure money maker for dealerships.

That's what I told my brother in law, told him to look at the car in a month. I'll be able to see the neighbors car in a couple months when I go there too, can't wait. After doing some research, it sounds like they MAY be applying Cilajet, which I would assume is somewhat similar to Aquartz and OptiCoat. I need to do some more research on these coatings if people are thinking they are scratch (swirl) resistant.

Ask him if he wants to buy a bridge? The fine print on these contracts are either very restrictive or vague and are done so that making an enforceable claim is impossible. If he doesn't want to buy that bridge tell him to set his hair on fire and run away from that stealer.

While some of these products are very good, they are not worth the money that dealerships charge. $800 is a good portion of a new paint job, if something goes wrong. Add to that, that they will see very little returns, nothing but money for them.

Im the recon manager at a nissan dealership and we make stupid money off those products. The company gives us the product for free, but then we pay a certain amount for the "warranty". People have brought there cars back saying its junk, but nobody ever made a claim in the year and a half ive been here. Theres no certain price they charge for it just whatever price you agree to pay.

It would be great if someone challenged the contract and brought their vehicle back for reapplication on a monthly basis insisting that their vehicle didn't look identical to the way it did when they took delivery. I wonder how many reapps they'd get away with before they gave them their money back?

A close freind of mine, who is also into detailing. said the dealership he s a salesmen for also sells a coating that last, No more waxing. Blah, blah. told me the detail shop just pust and extra coat of spray wax on the car. That a scam right their

my gf just bought a 2012 cc volkwagen, she bought the 10 yr 120,000 mi warranty and the guy that sold us the warranty, because we knew him, gave us the xzilon coating for free. i told him we would'nt pay for it but if you want to throw it in it's ok by me. in a couple of months i'll be waxing or sealing it anyway.

i used to run the detail dept. at BMW, there sealant is a joke it lasts for about 2 months and its some junk.... I tried it on my M3 and was NOT impressed, oh well it paid well to apply it LOL
