Blue Jaguar S-Type - Extensive Paint Correction!

This blue Jaguar S-Type belongs to my friends mother. The car was bought brand new and has never been detailed properly, or at all for that matter. My friend wanted to surprise her with a complete detail while she was on vacation for the week, so he contacted me make it look new again.

The car was a total mess when I arrived to pick it up. It had been sitting under a tree and collected quite a bit of debris on the paint.

Below are pictures of what the car looked like…

I spent quite a while washing the car to remove as much of the contaminants from the paint as possible. I mixed some Pink Stuff cleaner to the wash bucket, which really helped to break through the dirt & grime. All of the door, hood and trunk jambs were sprayed with Kleens general purpose cleaner & degreaser and thoroughly scrubbed with a variety of different brushes, then rinsed and wiped clean with a micro fiber towel.

After the washing session was complete, I decided to look at the condition of the paint under halogens lighting. Below is what the car looked like…

Upon inspection under the halogens, I noticed that the top surfaces had some severe etching from lack of any protection over the years as well as yellow road paint in the wheel wells and on the lower body panels. The paint was extremely swirled and had a good amount of RIDS, bird bomb etchings, etc..

First, I removed the yellow road paint by using a combination of acetone, body solvent, plastic razor blades and a clay bar. After the road paint was removed, I masked off the body panels and spray painted the wheel wells satin black. I then clayed the entire exterior and wiped down the body with 91% alcohol to ensure the surface was free of any contaminants whatsoever before polishing.

After choosing a test panel and testing out various products and pads, I decided to use Meguiar’s 105 on a yellow Meguiars So1o foam pad for all of my heavy correction work. M105 worked well to cut through the heavy defects, but multiple polishing sessions were required to fully remove them. I decided to use Menzerna Super Intensive Polish on a yellow Meguiars So1o foam pad for a middle step, which heightened the gloss tremendously. I chose Menzerna 85rd for the final step to achieve the best finish possible.

Here are pictures of the finished product. Please note that some of the pictures were taken in different lighting and I am still learning how to use my new camera.

musicdjs- Thanks! All work was done by rotary.

Pats300zx- Thanks Pat! The color does look a lot different in the sun.

mr.ikon- Thanks. You got that right!

shine- Thanks! My friend said that she could hardly belive that it was the same car.

BEAUTIFUL work (as always!!)...

The 105/sip/85rd trifecta really is a killer combo!!!

The color looks great.. Like you said I think some of the drastic color enhancement is from the different lighting but I think the lions share of the difference in color is from your leveling the clear coat..

Great work:2thumbs:

zoomzoom mazda5- Thanks for the kind words!

MotorCity- Thanks!

dbesins- David, the paint was acually really nice to work with. Not too hard and not too soft. It had a few repainted panels which were in rough shape, but overall it was a relatively routine correction. It was a pleasure to meet you the other day!

artikxscout- Thanks a lot!

dave40co- Thanks! Yes, she was...
