Black or Silver 4runner....

Hey,

I'm in the process of purchasing a 3rd Generation 4runner Limited Edition. I'm a detailer, and I have plenty of tools- rotary, menzerna, d/a, griot's junk, zymol, etc. I've never owned a black car, but I really want to try it, knowing how good they can look when cleaned up. My silver M3 is just boring, my moms silver lexus is boring... should I go for the black, or just grab silver which is in more of abundance?????

Cliffs:

How bad is black to keep up??

it all depends on how often and how keen you are on keeping your car clean. Ive got a black 2002 celica that Ive owned brand new since 2002 with almost 70k miles and the paint on it looks good as new. Then again I wax or seal every month and wash atleast once to twice a week. Lighter colored cars definitely look clean longer and hide swirl marks much better. But since it appears that youve got all the required tools a black car shouldnt be that bad at all. Id say after one week my car still looks clean, two weeks is pushing it and 3 weeks you definitely have to wash it.

But Black Is Soooooo Sick

I agree, a freshly detailed black car looks "sick" but give it 20mins and you'll be thinking: "dammit, there's dust on it already?"

ya know, sounds like your up for the challenge, go for the black if you can find it! What year are you looking at?

Black hands down. What better way to promote yourself than with that dark shiny car. With a silver, it just goes blah. I agree that black is a PITA to care for but then again if you get a silver car, you will always wish for a black one. Agree that perhaps something dark metallic might be a better tradeoff.

If you're a detailer, I'd go with metallic or silver. Black looks good and makes a statement, but once it gets dirty (about 20mins after its clean), it can make a negative statement. If you want to make an impression to your clients, a clean silver or metallic that's hiding imperfections that most people can't see is better than a noticeable dirty black vehicle. Just my $.02.

Knowing how wet a black car can look I have to agree with the majority you'll be pissed 30 minutes after washing it because you will see every speck of dust.

I wash my car weekly and garage park it both at work and at home, when I owned a black car it drove me nuts being able to see all the dust on the car. I have since switched over to silver although my favorite has to be the charcoal grey color (or any of its deviations and/or aka's).

i would go with a metallic maybe not silver cause it never turns head but a nice dark color metallic looks nice

I agree with Diesel. A dark metallic or pearl can be very rewarding in its own right from a detailing perspective. What year of the 3rd gens are you looking? The 2002 Stellar Blue Pearl looks rather nice.

2000 4runner LTD w/ Leather ... there's a nice silver one near by, and the charcoal/metallic is even harder to find than black!! But yeah, it would be a great compromise.

I've had both. Right now, its a metallic silver A6. Depending on the paint, metallic silver can look damn good (some say dashing) if the dark trim contrasts nicely and holds its looks longer than black. Silver is a classy color but this debate always depends on the model car. Some cars look great with certain colors and awful with others.

The A6 silver shimmers in the sun and looks awesome under early light and dusk. There is a reason why nearly all car ads (audi, lexus, infinity, mercedes etc) seem to showcase silver over any other color.

That said, I've seen Audis with the darker oyster metallic and it looks great too. It's a nice compromise between black and silver.

Heck, I'm already OCD with silver and afraid I'd turn downright suicidal with black...

Personally, I'd rather enjoy a clean appearance than fret over every imperfection with black.

My previous car was an Orient Blue BMW 330Ci and I treated it like black because it was so dark. I perfected a lot of skills on that paint and decided to go with the detailer's final exam and got Black Sapphire for my new one. I absolutely love it and don't have many problems maintaining it. I personally love the look of a perfectly maintained black car and while it takes a little more maintenance I have been very happy with the color. I get lots of compliments on it and it also serves as my rolling "billboard" for my services.

In my opinion there are just too many silver BMW's on the road! (No offense intended - I'd take a silver M3 over anything black if I had the chance).

awwww its his first post... spend a few more minutes around here, and you'll know why I posted this thread :thx

Because post count determines one's knowledge?????.....:LOLOL

:thx

My last car was silver, my current car is black.

For me it's been a no-win situation. When I had a silver car I wanted a black one. IMO no other color looks better than a freshly detailed black. Now that I have a black car, at times I miss the easier to care for silver. The black looks great after a wash/wax/detail, but it's short-lived. But I know if I went back to silver I'd miss those moments admiring the deep wet black after a detail.

I'm also thinking that if the car is a garage queen, then black or another dark color is the best. But if its a daily driver--the constant upkeep would necessitate a padded cell (which might not be bad if I had a car to detail in there).
