Black MB S430 Detail w/overspray

This is THE worst case of overspray I have ever seen or ever had the pleasure of detailing.

I have yet to complete the detail so don't expect any AFTER pictures just yet but I do have several BEFORE pictures and they are SCARY:wait

This client went on vacation and left their car parked at the harbor and when they came back it was covered in this white overspray. It is not your normal average overspray that can be removed with clay as no clay I had touched it.

I started using a foam cutting pad and Menzerna PG and that removed a good deal of the overspray. I hope to complete the detail this week but it is one of those "When I have the time" type of details that waits in the wings when I have nothing else going on.

OK...prepare yourself.....Here is a picture of the hood from the drivers side. You can't see to much of the overspray from this angle but you can see some of the light marring.

Now to demonstrate that the overspray is not just on the top surfaces.....here is the rear quarter panel on the drivers side.

Now you all just need to wait for the AFTERS.........wish me luck:lmfao

Good Luck Anthony!

I might have you beat though. My friend had some pieces painted on his car and the painter called him to pick it up. As he was driving down there, the painter painted some rims for his bro. OVERSPRAY ALL OVER every panel including windows.

However, the painter has agreed to wetsand/compound/polish it for free...I'll post pics tomorrow or something to compare :)

Ouch !!!

Anthony that hurts !!! I had a tough car yesterday with horrible clearcoat overspray all over the repainted finish.

Took me 7 hours to complete the exterior !!! Good Luck with that one !!!

UPDATE

Well Ron, my assistant and myself went to work today on this black S430 today and while we were unable to finish it today we got it at least 90% wetsanded.

Nothing would remove the overspray so we had to knock it down with 2000 grit paper. Ron was a great help in this stage and he went to town doing a quick and very efficient job.

He taught my assistant as he went along and she helped out a great deal also. I followed behind them with my rotary leveling out the finish.

I hope to post more pictures tomorrow with a more in-depth procedure and hopefully finished AFTER pics:)

Damn thats a project! How many times do you see a car that has overspray that can't be removed from clay? it must be nice to have 2 helpers! What wetsand did you use? Thanks and your work is always inspirational!

Thank You Woob....

We used 3M's 2000 grit paper. Would of liked to have used 2500 but the body shop was out.

Check back tomorrow for more pics..........God willing:)

Well I had the chance to continue polishing and wetsanding this S430 today and I got about 85% of it polished and ready to be hand polished and then waxed.

I took 3 more pics today. These are of the front passenger side fender.

The first picture is of the fender sanded and wiped down with Hi-Temps Klean, which removes all oils, dust and any buffing residue.

Taped off the trim and moldings and went to work with a LC wool pad and Akrya's 600 grit leveler.

This combo made fast work of the sandingmarks. Here is a picture of the same fender after this combo

After the wool pad and the Akrya leveler I used a LC orange pad and Hi-Temps Medium Cut.

This gave me a nice finish and on top of this I'll use IP and a LC polishing pad.

This is all I have for now, check back tomorrow for (hopefully) finished pictures:cool

I need to try that Klean stuff beause I get buffing dust and splatter everywhere! I don't feel so bad though if an old pro like you has the same problem, hopefully I can learn to control which direction all of it goes. Great job so far though, can't wait to see the final results.

Is Hi Temp Klean a new product? I don't see it on TOL. lately i'm getting hooked on that TOL stuff! GS 40 is on my list along with some dressings. I'm gonna try out Medium Cut with my PC too.

Anthony, how do you like the process of Hi Temp's Klean vs. Prep Wash? I find I get so much residue/dusting into the cracks and crevices and need to wash it out. The trade off I suppose is spend time rewashing the car vs. spending more time on taping off the car. I'm diggin' the transformation of each step. It's nice when you get to spend time on a "project car" like that as opposed to rushing it.

No, the Klean is an old product but also a versatile one. I use it as a wipe down between each buffing step and I also use it to pre-soak my pads in (all but my wool pads as they should only be spurred).

I prefer the Klean over the prep wash as I can use the Klean as I go along. I almost always tape off like crazy so splatter is not as much of a concern for me as always buffing on a clean oil free surface. Using painters paper also helps for glass and for also crunching up and shoving it in panels and/or gas lid covers.

I hope to get done tomorrow and then post up some finished pics. I am not sure though as it is suppossed to be like 110F tomorrow so I may pass out from heat stroke first:lmfao

Take care,
Anthony

Anthony, I've heard some people mention using a 50/50 mixture of rubbing alcohol and water to remove oils and fillers in between polishing steps. Would this be something that you'd recommend? And btw, I admire you for having the nerve to take sandpaper to a Mercedes like that and also for having the skill to fix such an intimidating mess.:bow
