Black car with scratches ...

Have a Black car and had what looked like water marks on the hood, that would not come out. This morning I tried
some white polishing compound on the spots, without
rinsing the surface first. I then rubbed hard. After removing the polish, the areas are dull and have scratches
in the clear-coat. I’m very upset. Is there anything I can do to restore these areas ???

Thanks !!!

By not cleaning the painted surface before applying polish, you just compounded the paint with dust and grit.

Depending on the polish you are using, and how hard you rubbed that grit into your paint, all you may have to do is wash the painted surface and reapply the polish. If that doesn't clear it up, you will likely need to use a succession of finer grit polishes to get the surface smooth again.

Will using a clay bar smooth the surface where these
light scratches are, as I was going to clay the vehicle soon anyway.

There's really no need in the double posting of the same question....You'll probably get more attention if you limit the same question to one thread. But to answer this one, No clay will not remove your scratches.

Never take any compounds or polish to the car without washing before hand.

I would wash the car, clay, swril remover, then polish. If you are working by hand then work in small areas about 2x2 foot, this will give you control over the product.

What happened when you applied the compound you ground in what dirt was on the surface, along with compound being a agressive product that will leave the car looking somewhat hazey. You should alway follow a compound with polish to bring back in the luster and smooth the finish.

Don't worry you can get the finish back with the right steps and elbow grease :naughty
