Black car, Bad swirls.

Hey everyone, great site.

I have a black 98 Grand Prix GTP and it is covered in tiny white swirl marks. I have never done a proper detailing to it, I think anything I have done, has only made the finish worse. I have two weeks off work and I want to do a proper job. I well use as much time as it takes to do a good job, but I can only spend about $200 to do it.

Last year I spent about 6 hours on it using Mothers California Gold clay bar and Meguiar’s Gold Class wax, and it came out great, but I could still see all the swirls, and the shine didn’t last very long. I might have even put on more swirls.

Here are some pics of my car.

The last pic you can see how bad the swirl marks are. I also have a bad spot on the front of my car, like the clear coat chiping right off. See here(just the white spots, the rest is just dead buggies ) :

So if you were going to detail my car what would you do, what would you use if you had $200 to spend and what order would you do it? Btw I'm in Canada, so I would rather shop for this stuff locally, but I'm willing to buy it online. Where do you Toronto guys get your stuff?



My Interior is pretty bad aswell.

What do you guys use for tinted glass, and for leather?

Btw I also have a ton of small chips in the hood from a lot of hwy driving. Some are right down to bare metal. I try to touch them up but it still looks like crap. Is there any good tips you guys can give me for touching up the chips?

For the bad swirls like that, for me there is only one tool I want in my hands and that's a rotary buffer. Perhaps you know a friend who has one you can borrow?

If not, you can buy a Dewalt with pads for $200.



I did a black car yesterday and it was loaded with swirls. The owner uses the "brush" at the auto wash bays and I hadn't done the car in a year.

I'm sore today, but I got the car looking good again.



I used:

- Zaino wash

-Rotary on 1000 rpm and 3M 1500 grit rubbing Compound with a yellow polishing pad

-hose car down again

-Meguiars #9 Swirl Remover with white finishing pad

-wash car and dry

-Meguiars #7 Show Car glaz

-Blitz wax.



I got the classic "wow, that looks good" when I was done.

It made me feel good.

For swirls that bad, a PC session is probably most efficient. You could try by hand, but it's labor intensive and time consuming. Canadian Tire has some larger stores (and I'm sure TO has plenty of those!) selling Meguiar's #9 and #2.



Niether the clay or Gold Class will do anything for swirls, so you'll have to polish the car with something abrasive (depends on how bad), glaze, then wax.

4DSC did not mean don't clay or wax, just that don't expect either of those items to remove swirls. To clay your car after at least 6 months from your last clay session would do you good. It will remove any embedded contaminants and be a good first step in prepping the paint for the actual swirl removal with abrasive products.

Here is my Wife's 2000 Grand Prix GT.

It was full of swirls from the dealer.....

Here is the before picture.

I used a "Wen" orbit Buffer with 3M SMR and kept buffing till they disappeared.

Then added Klasse AIO then SG

For tinted windows I use Eagle One 20/20 glass cleaner, it is ammonia free

Black touch up paint works nice, since there aren't a whole bunch of metal flakes. You can do a search for Langka or mother's scratch kit (available online only usually), which levels the blob from touch up paint. Works awesome on hood chips, so-so on side panels. There's also an article on Autopia on chip repair. Good luck! :bounce
