Big Scratch on spoiler.. How should this be fixed?

As you can see the scratch is pretty thorough(all the way?). Is the only good option is to sand down the rest of the rear spoiler, and completely repaint? Is there any way to just repair that one section instead of re-doing the entire spoiler?

I'm very confused right now -- after posting this here, I also went and found some information about just removing the spoiler altogether on my car. But removing it would leave some holes that need to be filled/welded, and the region under the wing will need to be reprimed, painted, glossed again.

What I am trying to get at is, how come it is possible to repaint a portion of the car rear, and not need to repaint the entire end, yet to fix this scratch on the spoiler itself, the entire piece has to be done, even the rest which is still good paint/gloss?

Sorry for such a newbie question, I really have no experience when it comes to auto paint!

When a paint/body shop repaints a specific area of the car they have to feather in the paint so that the transition from new to original is as smooth as possible. Many times though it's noticable. Since you're dealing with an isolated part of the car, rather than the middle of a door or the hood, you'll likely have better results by having the spoiler repainted.

i deal with a body shop through my dealer, i want to get an ss spoiler and i asked the owner how much he would charge me,

he said 125 bucks.

so you might be looking at 200 or so. how easy is it to remove ??

Did you buy the car new?

If not, could be you have an aftermarket spoiler & who knows what kind of quality (or lack thereof) prep work was done before spraying.

Can't tell for sure but it looks to me like I see primer in the seam of the spoiler and the panel. Looks to me like it's be repainted (poorly) and the paint has lifted.

Looks like a 300ZX TT, alot of people have had similar problems with the wing on that car. It does look like you will have to get it repainted, I wouldn't want to remove the wing, it might cost just as much to make it look good without the wing.

Even if you sand down the area to get all the bad paint off, you could leave an obvious line between new and old paint like Griz said. If they paint the whole spoiler, the trasition point can be hidden underneath body parts cause they aren't connected.

LOL, that's what I was thinking..."scratch"??!!

will spraying work temporarily? I just need a quick fix for the next month or so until I have more money to properly fix it. How would I go about spraying it, or should I ask a shop to do it?

I don't know what it is, I'm buying the car used and that imperfection on the spoiler was already there. You guys think it is maybe an aftermarket one? Or did the guy maybe get the stock spoiler poorly repainted before?

Well, you need to tell us what kind of car it is. It looks like a 300ZX TT, and if so, I have seen similar problems with the paint on the spoiler of those cars on many occasions. So it could be just the factory paint job on its last legs for the wing like I have seen before.

forget aboout respraying the current one. 300zx tt spoilers are know to Rot after a while. Chances are, that one has already rotted. Either buy a new OEM one ($$$$$$) or a replica one. the fitmet is OK at best. butif you dont mind, then its cool

bottom line: replaces the spoiler. Or go wingless, which looks good too

Now I'm not familiar with the Z's but you can remove the spoiler and the holes left behind you can get body plugs , kinda like buttons and paint to match although not perfect will look good and be cheaper than a full repaint, see them alot on Stangs that do spoiler deletes:xyxthumbs.

Thats a huge scratch:eek: :p . Thats pretty bad and definetly needs a repaint, touchup paint ain't gonna handle that but would pass the 5 foot rule well maybe 10 foot if you do a good job, thats just such a big area.

Or put some duct tape around the ends of the spoiler like racing stripes or somethin' :D ! You know the saying if you can't duct it, well you get it.......

yeah it is a Nissan 300ZX..

I can't seem to find body plugs anywhere online, would I have to custom weld metal into the holes then if I were to take the 'no spoiler' route?
