best to wash wool mitt before 1st use?

actully I have a couple of questions. I'm real anal about my cleaning, not just cars. I even have seperate ziplock bags for MF, waffle weave MF, wool mitt, etc.. you get the picture. Anyway, I'm a big fan of the wool mitts. However one didn't last too long, about 6 months use before it really started to shed bad in the dryer espescially, wool everywhere. I just ordered a new wool mitt from autogeek. Should I wash before 1st use? Can I throw in some used MF towels in there? Please correct me if my washing/drying methods are wrong: delicates, cold cold temp and delicate low heat for dryer. Also using non-bleach detergent, Tide. Of course they're washed alone. I sometimes combine used MF's, waffle weaves, mitt, and applicator pads in there, nothing else. TIA

Wouldn't hurt to give it a wash before it's first use. Take out w/e loose lint there is and what not. I got the same washing method as yours, save for the drying. I hang dry the wash mit (which may / may not be the best idea) The MF's I throw in the dryer though.

Still pretty new to this myself though

Ok, I'll give the hand air dry a shot for the mitt. I remember with my old one that even with full dry cycle it was still pretty damp on the inside where you put your hand in. I guess I can hang it in the garage where its really hot, south FL weather.

wool can absorb 30% of its own weight in moisture before it feels wet. So when you think it's dry it likely has a ways to go. When dealing with wool fibers anything over a 7.5-8 ph will cause some serious damage to the fiber. Mix some tide and check the ph levels using a hot tub ph test kit. 39cents at home depot or spa shop.

I usually went with a local brand cleaner.

I've used their stuff for quite a while, both at home and in the professional carpet, upholstry, and fabric cleaning area. They are good products. I'm not a huge enviro nut. In this instance these products are very safe for most delicate fibers.

As an edit I'll add you can purchase many wool specific cleaners, the reason i chose Bi-o-kleen is it was perectly fine for applications other than just wool.

Ok thats very good to know. Thanks for the info. I will check to see if its ok. I may end up buying a seperate detergent specifically for those towels and the wool mitt. I keep hearing people talking about Woolite.

Woolite used to contain a butt load of optical brightners and fabric softners. Which attract uv rays. In time damaging many types of fibers.

I personally stay away from it. there are many laundry soaps that contain mild high ph, no phosphates, nosalts, no optical brightners, and no built in fabric softners. If you go to your "green isle" at your local supermarket many times they will have these products for purchase.

Alright, thanks again for info. Will keep a lookout. Is it ok to turn your wool mitts inside out? I just finished drying and its dry and all but still damp on the inside where i put my hand in.
