beginner how to do sealer wax

hi all,

I just purchase a new silver 06 BMW X5 this weekend. The dealer offer to do sealer(protective wax) to my car but I decline. I would like to learn how to do it myself and save $$$$$.

Can I get a list of product I need to purchase? What brand do you highly recommend? Any beginner instructions how to apply the sealer wax properly?

If you have ever waxed a car before it is just like that. Most sealants are simple rub on rub off. The dealer makes it sound like it is something special that they do that no human being could do without years of training. ;)

You can buy a sealer online from any detailing store and do it yourself. A sealer is simply an amino functional silicone fluid, which in English means that it will apply a barrier of protection over your car that is much stronger than a regular wax wound provide. Some seal instead of wax, some seal and then wax. All personal preference really (although unless you're going for extreme depth or just like to wax, waxing is typically really not needed).

When you do the sealer yourself, just make sure you read how long it takes for the sealer to actually seal. It starts as soon as you apply it, and can take up to a day or two sometimes.

What did the dealer want to charge? They wanted $400 to do my wifes Lexus. We politely declined. :)

There are lots of great sealents out there, I would do a search of the forum to fiind some reviews (i know i hate when people tell me to search) but you can find reviews already writen and see what others liked and didnt like and find what you need for your car. Also rember a sleanet will only last a few months not alife time like the stealership says so maybe trying a few sealents would work and after a while you would know what you like and what you down. Some of my reocmnedations would be

Poorboys Ex-p sealent

Klasses Paint sealent

(those are the two I use but im more of a waxer then a sealer)

thanks for the quick reply. the dealer charge $550

most of the detail shop in my area use blue coral. should i try this brand? i like to get a list of recommendation from the forum.

X5 NICE! Chicks dig SUV's nowadays. Which size engine?

Silver looks great with Acrylic Jett Trigger Sealant from Werkstatt. Nice shimmer on my silver paint. Maybe some FK 1000P once a month to bring out more 'bling' and 425 to keep it nice and slippery, my towel slides right off the car! (get the gallon, better value and ask for a $5 sample of the 1000P).

It'll look similar to this

thanks. X5 4.8is.

wow! your silver porsche looks slick! When did you start applying these product, how many years?

Acrylic Jett Trigger Sealant from Werkstatt, FK 1000P once a month, and 425.

$550!!!! Take perhaps $10 in Sealer cost, and then an hour of labor. Wow! I should stop selling product and start sealing cars for dealerships. :)

As for what brand, there's a lot of good sealers on the market. Check the Autopia sponsor listing, you'll find plenty to choose from.

My BoxsterS is six years old and is usually parked outdoors except when I come into NYC on the weekends for work/play. Since my car is not new like yours I need to polish it before I seal it. I used Klasse All in One polish like so many but I'll be using Werkstatt Acrylic Prime going forward.

For weekly washes I use Optimum No Rinse Soap with two buckets and microfibers towels.

Like most Autopians I NEVER go to a car wash (they use too many dirty wash mitts and drying towels). I dry it with Waffleweave towels from Poorboysworld.com

After washing and before drying I will use FK 146 spray (quick detailer) so that the paint is 100% clean. Its a combination cleaner and "wax as you dry" type spray that wards off dust like 425.

I don't really apply a monthy wax every month more like every other month. That's because I use spray waxes like 425 after every wash, it makes the monthly paste wax last much much longer. I try to avoid using paste waxes since it requires much harder rubbing on the paint which leads to swirls. Sprays let you stick with the rule of speed not pressure.

Congratulations! You made a very good decision. Do it yourself for a lot less money and better results. :bigups

There are lots of good sealants out there. Just try some of those mentioned in this thread and you'll find at least one that you like.
