Been awhile since I've been around

Detailing Stare
Well, it's been awhile now since I've frequented the board. Some of you may still recognize the face. :)

I've been rather busy with other things for the past couple months, and to be honest, they've had my attention.

Dwayne knows as I spoke to him about this, but I was laid off the middle of February. I'd been at that company for almost 9 years.

So anyway, I'm doing some work now for a guy that has his own small company. I used to work with him at Gap - IT department. Well, I've been learning new skills, what with COBOL dying and all, and so this has kept me busy and I'm getting involved with this company in more than just programming.

I'll be going out of town next week for three days and then the following Sunday for a couple days or so. So, yea, I've been busy with things.

I've not been attending to my truck and car as I should either. Does anyone here take confession? :) I did finally get a couple coats of Wolfgang's on the truck after buffing it. But the wife's car has been terribly neglected (I expect her to leave me soon if I don't get it buffed and sealant on it!). :)

Anyway, thought I'd stop in and say hi. It'll be awhile before I can begin to frequent the board more than I have for the past several months.

Some of you may recall that a couple days before winter, that huge storm that came through Cincinnati, caused the car port to come crashing down on the truck and car. Well, they were repaired and the body shop ruined the hood of my truck. I'm certain the car is in bad shape as well. Well, I've not checkit out yet is why I don't know for a fact, but it is a safe bet.

Hard to describe, but where the damage was, they left jagged marks - you can't feel them but you can see them. Then they repainted my whole hood and took a buffer to it and left swirl marks and marring. I was able to improve on this, but you can't touch the jagged lines they left - several of those, one being two feet long along the edge of the hood.

You gotta love good, high quality work like that. Well, the point of that story is that I have to admit, it kind of took the wind out of my sails and feeling like the truck will never be the same again has caused me to not have quite the level of intensity in taking care of it and the car. But be not too dismayed as I am still going to keep them both in good condition and take good care of them, but it won't be an every weekend thing now for me. Plus I don't have that kind of time now really.

Ok, well, that's what has been going on in my life the past few months since I was on the board alot.

Once things settle down a bit, I hope to get back to the board more often. So many new faces around here. Really cool to see how this place is growing. :)

Oh, and some of you are probably wondering why I didn't take the truck and car back to the body shop and demand they redo the work? Am I right? Well, because, if they can't get it right the first time and when they are getting paid, I doubt they can manage to get it right the second time and when they are not getting paid.

Wow, you have had a winter!! :(

Sorry to hear about the lay-off, but glad that you could find something that suits you.

The "confessional" would be a busy place around here, as I think we all have had times when "life" interferes with our detailing time, so don't feel too bad about it. :hippi

I'm really sorry to hear about the way the body shop mis-treated your vehicles.:( From your description, could it be "buffer burns" or holograms on the finish? :dunno Maybe somebody more knowledgeable will chime in here?????? While I can understand your reluctance to give them another shot at the paint :bigscream , I wonder if it would be worthwhile to go back to the insurance company & have them recommend a place to repair the repair? :dunno Your vehicles were so nice before this all happened!! :brick

Good luck with the new job & I'll look forward to your next update whenever you have time!

Hey Nora, rabbi :) It's good to see familiar faces around here.

I did consider speaking with the insurance company about this, but I didn't want and couldn't have either fo the vehicles tied up - even for a week. Yep, the marring was hologram effects. They and much of the swirl marks left by them are gone now - some PoorBoys SSR 2.5 took care of that.

The only way to get rid of the marks I spoke about that are beneath the clearcoat is to repaint the entire hood after taking off the paint. I'm going to live with it, and if you aren't looking for it, most people wouldn't notice right away.

I'm adjusting as best as I can to the fact that my baby is going to get some hard kocks in life - being a daily driver and all. :(

Monday I head to Washington, DC for a few days and then Sunday following that I'm heading to somewhere near Philly, PA. Going to be a bit of a madhouse for me beginning tomorrow - more busy thatn I have been. But learning lots of new things.

Hopefully in a month I'll be back to being here more often, but wanted to stop in for a bit this morning.

See you guys soon. Glad to see you're still here.

You two have been busy posting! Way ahead of me now. For a time there Rick, you and I were running neck and neck! :)

Keeotee,
Sorry to hear about the lay off (been there, done that.. it stinks), but I am glad to hear that you were able to find something.

When you start getting things back in order, hopefully you can find the time to work on the truck and car, and still get to post here a bit.
We'll be here.... Nice to see you back

You've had way too rough of a winter :nono

Sorry to hear about all your troubles. It's good to see you postinbg again though. I know how it feels to have a pristine "baby" and have it wrecked. It does kinda take the wind out of your detailing sails. Don't let it get you down too bad. :) Good luck with your new job as well!!!

"IT department. Well, I've been learning new skills, what with COBOL dying and all, and so this has kept me busy and I'm getting involved with this company in more than just programming."

Cobol- Fortran, do you still use those punch cards to feed in the mainframe...
My wife does JCL stuff....

welcome back
jeff

Kee and Jeff,

Good to see you both stopping by again. Hope things are going better for both of you! :bigups

Wow, Cobol and Fortran... good to see that I'm not the only "old-timer" here! :D

Nowadays, it's a good idea to pick up some skills in languages like Java, VB.net, PHP, Perl and some others. Some knowledge of JavaScript, XML and XHTML is a big plus.

Good luck guys!

Hi Keeotee & Jeff! Glad to see you're still around.

Like Boss, I consider myself to be a member of the IT old-timer club. Basic, Fortran, and Pascal were my forte back in the day. Yes, I remember using punch cards and punch tape too. :bigscream

(tear) I feel like it's a family reunion. How you all doin? I'm finnaly back on my feet after a real tough tim with life for a while. It's great to be back and in the swing of the detail world!

Thanks everyone for the welcome back and the condolences on being laid-off - lots of that been going round the past few years - finally caught up with me.

I use alot of "-" dashes in my typing - old COBOL habit! :)

I was trying to pick up some new skills at gap, but only got a little of the C, UNIX, SQL, JAVA, blah, blah, blah. Since doing some work for this new company, I've been learning quite a bit and doing some JAVA programming - which I happen to like, and ZML is pretty cool too, plus we specialize in RFID, so lots to lern there for me as well.

Still haven't gotten to the wife's car though. Been lousy weather around here lately - on the cold side and just don't feel like working in the colder temps anymore.

This coming Saturday I am scheduled to do a car for someone at gap. Been doing this lady's car for 2.5 yeras now and some others there too, so they expect me to continue on with that. Well, extra money is a good thing.

It's always good to see some fellow detailers that are in IT. Means we speak a couple of the same languages! :)
