If I lived at the beach I would want someone to detail my car while I'm sunbathing etc. . . so why not offter it is a service to the people who are at Ocean City and take it to your house or do a complete mobile job, I think it may work, you could sell it to me if i I didn'tk now how to do it...

Yeah, that's a great idea! To tell you the truth, I've never thought of doing it, but with so many out of state people here on vacations or other extended stays, I've been taking extra time trying to find people and cars that are actually from this state, thinking only local people would b interested. Well, with NO business lately, I might just have to do something like that.

Here's the problem--how to market and advertise? Give things to hotels in the area? Go find people?

Any ideas?

Oh yeah, I'm much closer to Rehoboth and Dewey Beach (about 10-15 minutes) than OC in Maryland.

What you might have to do is:

a) Like you said, get with a few of the hotels in the area. If they have concierges, that's even better.

b) Another option is tourist-type websites. See if they will give you ad space for a reasonable price.

This is what I'm thinking so far. It was mentioned by someone that most people don't have the budget to have their car professionally detailed when on vacation. That's very true, as even we probably couldn't afford to have something like that done on vacation, even though I'm the detailer. Mainly, it's the more budget minded motels and the like in the area, that would be the places to probably avoid.

What I'm thinking are higher end hotels, more exclusive beach front suites, and even maybe realtor agencies that handle beach house rentals. This is quite often where more lucrative clients can be found, and offer a good possibility that they may desire to have their car put in tip, top shape without ever lifting a finger, a true conveniance for people on vacation for rest & relaxation.

That, and I may try to figure something out with the golf course 2 miles from here where my father works. It's quite high class and exclusive, attracting some rather wealthy golfers sometimes. This is another perfect place for advertisement of detailing services.

I just can't believe why I never started doing these things months ago! I got out of school for summer vacation on the first week of June, and had my first client the next Monday. Things have really dropped off since then!

Here's a tip if you’re looking to detail vacationers cars at the beach.

I'm from Ohio and whenever we traveled to the beach all we talked about is how bad the salt water/ salt air can be for the car. This combined with the bazillions of bugs that get impaled on your windshield in the summer should be reason enough for a tourist to at least have quick detail. Use this point is your brochure. This may or not be true about the salt air but if people think it's true, it is.

Like I read earlier get to know the concierge and the valets they are the guys whom the majority of hotel guests go to for info and those valets can recommend you on the spot while standing next to the client vehicle.

You could probably generate some small pocket change from local attractions once you build up a good tourist niche. I'm sure they thro a buck or two your way for leaving their attraction or restaurant in the car.

More good points! Too bad I didn't start to figure these things out months ago! About the only problem I can forsee, is that I'll already be going back to school on the 28th of August, so already there's not much of the summer left. That, and I'll be in Pennsylvania for 2 weeks of family visiting/vacation. I wonder if I could start setting up some detailing jobs with people I know up there:up :up .

The point about the salt water and see spray getting on your car, along with the bugs are more great points. When we stayed in Nags Head for a week in June and were quite close to the water, you could tell by looking at the car. I washed it once while we were there along with our relative's van, but it would have been nice I think to have a service like that available for vacationers. A discount is always nice too, offering a $5 or $10 off coupon to visitors.

I know there are people around here that would like something like something like this to be available. But, another problem I'm running into is this. Being that I'm 16, I have my license, but no car of my own, and can't drive by myself "legally" until August 28. Both of my parents work during the week, and I do the detailing based at our home, about 15 minutes from all of the resort areas. So, assuming that most people only bring one car on vacation with them, they can't exactly drive it some place, drop it off, and then get a ride with someone else like all of my other cusomers have been able to do.

Mobile detailing would solve this problem, but, like I said, I can't legally drive on my own, so it may be out of the question, unless I can figure something else out. That, and with school coming uo so soon again, I may not havr the time anymore.

You know, it seems like for every step I take forward, I go 25 steps back, and then run into a brick wall....
