Im trying to help my friend out with a new bathtub thats been installed and the guys who installed it somehow scuffed it up .

No pictures ,sorry. The house is in LA and hes trying to fix the house up to rent out and will drive me up there to see what I can do.

Anyone know anything about bathtubs!? He thinks its gelcoat.

I have a rotary and all the compounds, sandpaper and polishes for car paint and hoping that will work.

Help! Its an all day drive up and back and need to know if its probable that I can repair it for him! Thanks!!

Is it a standard type like you can buy at Home Depot or custom? You could try checking with the "pros" at Home Depot for some basic info. I would be cautious not knowing how deep the finish is. When I drilled holes to mount a new shower door on mine the finish appeared to be about 2x as thick as standard car paint, but I don't know if that is typical. I'm thinking wool to keep the heat down on the fiberglass.

Thanks Nth!

Its from Lowes and fiberglass so assume its standard, thats all I know right now.

Hes trying to find out more info for me on it.

I was concerned about thickness also and if it has a clearcoat.

I have a wool pad :bigups

So far I have found out there is no clearcoat and doing some internet searching the gel coat on bathtubs is only .5 mil (12 microns) Yikes!

We are going up this Wed.

What have I got myself in to?:help: I hope I dont screw it up! Wish me luck! :D

It will probably be rather soft, so go easy, especially since you can't measure. At least there is no concern for UV protection or thinning of clear coat. There are companies that can resurface them if that is what it takes. My old apartment had the counter tops done and the guy said they do mostly showers and sinks. Smells horrible for about 48 hours though.

Yeah, looks like I need to go easy ! I was already expecting to start with a rotary because gel coat on boats is hard.

He descibed it as a scrape or scuff and Im hoping its just surface.

Im even hoping Mr Clean erasor will work!
