Baffled about scratches

I am in the process of detailing a 2004 Lexus ES300 (black). I did a test spot on the hood, and decided to go with Menz IP with Edge yellow foam pad. All the scratches came out, as did water spots. The roof and trunk went equally as well and quickly. I got to the sides, and there are some seriois scratches (not the type you can feel with your fingernail) and these types, I have never had problems removing before. I tried everything I can think of today, from Power Gloss to 105 to PWF Pads to Black heavy cut Edge pads on a rotary dewalt and even did a test spot wet sanding...nothing even touched these scratches....and I mean didnt even remove one scratch....I am baffled...any suggestions or comments would be greatly appreciated.

Could be under the clear. I once worked on an older M3 where the top of the trunk was trashed and took a while to figure out that it needed to be repainted.

That is what I was thinking. Afterr the client picked up the car, I asked him if it had been fixed, and he indicated that the rear bumper and quarter panels were damaged from a crash. My guess is that they re-cleared the entire side, clearing right over the scratches.

Go to a camera store or an art supply store and get a 10x Jewlers Lupe. It would have immediately cleared up the situation for you. You will find a lot of uses for it.

I like this one: 15-Power Lighted Loupe - Lee Valley Tools . It's a little more magnification than a 10X, but not so much that it's hard to use (as I found my 30X to be).

Roger that. With a 30X you can focus it on your hand and literally see all the contours of the folds of your skin in detail and how hair follicles emerge from the surface  but when looking at metallic flake finishes with it, it looks like you're looking at a fine precious stone up close. Pretty awesome looking, actually, just not as practical as the 10 X though.
