Backing Plate?

If I use the 4" pad, do I have to use the smaller backing plate, or can I use the standard size backing plate.

I'm guessing the smaller backing plate, you don't want to cause damage from having the large one hit the paint.

get the 3 1/2 inch plate.....you will be better off....you can do damage with the standard plate...you will have to much exposed plate and can damage paint if you move it the wrong way....plus rule of thumb is plate should be smaller than pad

Yes, it is possible to use them on a larger BP, but if you don't use the smaller (3.5") BP then you run the risk of the BP contacting your paint. I don't think it's worth saving a few $$$ compared to the risk. The larger BP might also add to the PC "bogging" down, which is one of the factors in choosing a smaller pad.
