Autopian's Worst Nightmare, P2

As DH & I pulled into Kroger/Sonic parking lot, we saw that a local car club had a show going on, so we decided to have a look.

A lot of interesting old cars, and some modified newer ones -- but the awful part was this -- most of these cars are hobby cars, right? And people have put quite a few $$ into them?

Now, this is a local show, anything goes kind of thing, not a speciality show with cars with "do not touch signs" on them, but I was chagrined to see what was happening here!!

The first thing I noticed was people rubbing (Yes, rubbing, not gently wiping) their cars with t-shirt scraps, other "rags", and one ricer had a whole bath towel (which he kept laying on the asphalt, then picking up and rubbing some more)!! Some had Meg's QD, but TW products abounded.

And then we talked a while with one owner (of a London Roadster) and it took everything I had not to reach over and try to clean the polish residue from around the chrome trim!! :scared

I guess I'm sounding pretty "snooty", but it just seems that if you're gonna put that much time, effort, and $$ into cars, you'd learn how to care for their exteriors!! :nixweiss

I wanted to run around distributing MFs to everyone!! (but never would -- I really wouldn't want to offend anyone!) Whew ~ we had to leave so my blood pressure would go down!

I'm going to a classics show tomorrow - we'll see what kinda stuff they're doing wrong there!! (this is gonna be SOOOO fun lol.)

I feel your pain on this experience, man. The last car show I went to was pure pain for me. People touching and rubbing against the cars like they were in a car lot or something. It was really a hard thing to live through. We get in to a mode of "don't touch the car except in certian places" and it makes us unfit for the rest of the world or something. :p If I could get a set of those velvet ropes and "Do Not Touch" signs for around my car when I park it then I'd be a happy camper. Touch your own cars as much as you want. If everybody kept their cars as clean and well taken care of as we do then half of us would be out of work when detailing season starts. lol ;)

so terry cloth towels are bad? Like old bath towels, cause thats all my families ever used :o Where you get the MF's at?

I have been doing car shows for 4 years now, I have see so manythings like that, I just stoped watching them. makes me to mad:mad:

Yeah - they are pretty rough -- check out the search on microfiber and you'll find out a bunch about this --

Some sources for MFs: JT International (great price, great quality!); CMA; Neatitems --

One of the sights I forgot to mention: an owner in BLUE JEANS leaning up against his fender!! :scared and his kid, or someone elses, rubbing back and forth against the door!! Couldn't believe it!

Boy, do I know what that is like. I used to show cars and prep them and have seen all kinds of weird stuff.

Went to a SVT show near the Gwinnett Place Mall (V4M knows where that is) and almost all the car owners had TW and AA in their detailing kits. One guy was QDing with Meg's Quik Detailer and I wanted to shake his hand.

Only one car I saw was using Zaino, a white SVT Cobra. The Zaino distributor was there and kept sending people over to look at this car, which was very nice. He said that the car next to it had carnauba on it. I went over and looked at that car. It didn't have carnauba on it - it had Finish 2001 on it. Made the Z guy's job really easy.

It's depressing.......

yeah I'm hoping to get hooked up with other local Z users so I can get some local group buys going. Sal tells me there is no distributor for the state of MI, so I gotta go it direct or something..... unless theres another distributor who can ship it out to me. :nixweiss

Oh man, stuff like that always makes me cringe.

I hate it when I see my friends and family doing something like setting grocery bags on their trunk and then slidding them off. Its always a strugle between, saying something and sounded like an overzealous car finatic, and repressing my pain in seeing paint damaged.

On the bright side, these peoples lack of proper paint care keeps many professional detailers in buisiness :)

it just annoys me when I try and advise people NOT to do these kind of things to MY car or cars that I have to detail for free. They always respond, "Oh don't worry about it..... I know it will be fine trust me! I've been washing and waxing cars longer than you've been alive..... I'm sure I know what I'm doing (as they grab a can of turtle wax paste - original formula) :nono

around where I live, there's this bar, and the owner drives a red Acura NSX. I drove by one day and looked at it, its in bad shape:( the paint has bad swirls and some hazing & oxidation, looks like it got owned by a buffer, maybe one day he'll be outside when i drive by and I can talk to him and give him some tips I've learned from you guys :D

Funny thing is, according to the front plate he bought it from a ritzy exotics dealer, and you think a place like that would really detail out a car like this before they sell it, or at least the buyer would take care of it.

I'm going to a show tommorrow. Neighbor has his 32 ford roadster in it. Awesome car, awesome guy. We tradeed tips tonight, and luckily when I brought up zaino, ,he knew exactly what it was.

I hope I don't see these bad things you guys talk about. I really don't wanna see TW in this show.

At the last all-car meet I went to, I chatted with a guy from KS who was using Meguiar's QD on his Galant.

Next time, I think I am going to enter this show.

hahaha my wife thinks, "a towel is just a towel" - thinks I need to just go get those 20-packs from wal mart......

gets confused and mad when I chew her out for some of the stuff she does to her car..... :argue

I HATE IGNORANT PEOPLE!! (atleast when it comes to detailing and those types of things)

See my thread about my moronic neighbor-wait until I get the film developed. You will not believe it! He wins any current horrible detailing contest hands down!
