Autoglym+P21S carnauba vs. Glass Coating technology from Japan

Hi everyone,

1st post. I recently bought a Mazda RX8 2009 facelift and since then I have taken to detailing the car myself - using Autoglym Super Resin Polish followed by 2 coats of extra gloss protection (12 hour cure time) and then topped off with 2 coats of P21S 100% carnauba wax. I did this a couple of weeks ago, and the wet look and shine has been amazing. Water beading has also been pretty good.

However I've recently come across a Japanese product that puts a super strong sealant that they call a glass coat onto the paintwork. It's suppose to last 1-2 years and the water beading is amazing - have seen it myself at the local detailing place.

Now I am thinking though, 3-6 mths from now when my car is due in for a professional detail, I would like to get it glass coated, but was wondering if anyone here have heard of glass coating, or used it and happy with it. What are the pros and cons (apart from it being ultra pricey!). I am thinking as well, given that it adds about 6-8 microns onto the top clear coat, that any fine swirl marks that may have accumulated would be filled by this product.

Any advise would be greatly appreciated!

Welcome to Autopia!

Hmmm..never heard of that stuff.

Generally, products that claim to last for years aren't all that hot. Consider that *any* coating will require some sort of cleaning/polishing/*something* after a while and will almost certainly require some sort of "refresher", which often amounts to redoing the job (they just don't emphasize that and expect people to *not* stop back if the refreshers are supposed to be free). Such products can be great for people in certain situations, but I'm not sure you're in the target demographic (sounds like you're taking *very* good care of your car now, and that AutoGlym/P21s combo is a good one).

Still, they come out with new and wonderful products all the time and maybe this is one of them :nixweiss

I wonder if percynjpn knows anything about this stuff.

I dunno about that claim of adding "6-8 microns" to the clear, that sounds mighty thick to me  I'd sure look at a few vehicles that have it on them before you make up your mind. Ask about how you'd polish out any marring (that'd presumably be in the coating). And I'd inquire about how you remove it too.

Sounds somewhat similar to the upcoming Optimum Coating, at least with respects to water beading. Had it on my car since January, still going strong and I am washing my car with regular car wash soap, not ONR so the polymers in ONR don't help the coating keep beading.

Yes it is - we have a JGlaze place here. Spoke to the JGlaze guy in Thailand as well through MSN.

They have a couple of packages: one shot which is about 2X the cost of a normal car polish/wax and interior detailing, and the 1 year maintenance with 4 additional maintenance. which doubles the price up (hence I say its expensive).

I am keen to try it as in my situation:

1) Rainy season is coming and that means rain everyday for months on end so water spotting is a high possibility (I already have some below surface etchinga already from when my stupid dealer released the car to me unwaxed!

2) fill up the swirl marks (there are some coming up on some parts of the car - very minor and only seen at night under the light bulbs in my garage:think:, been washing it carefully using microfibre to dry it off too, so I must not be being careful enough)

I think other countries have the same type of glass coating under different names so anyone who have used it, appreciate the review and whether its worth the investment.

Yep it's JGlaze and they have a branch where I am. I spoke to the Thai guy who runs the JGlaze in Bangkok as well.

Only thing now is to decide if it is worth the investment. Getting a 1 year package = 4 times the costs of detailing.

Reason I am contemplating it: rainy season is almost upon us which means potential rain everyday. I can't cope with that in terms of avoiding water spotting! The coating will bead the water completely. It's also an inert coating which means oxidation is unlikely to occur. If not mistaken it's base chemical is SiO2 Silicon/silica dioixide?

The jap coats are IMO very good and they hit the market about ~10 years before Optimum.

Where are you based?

Based in Brunei (South East Asia, near Malaysia, Thailand and Singapore, not middle east as most people seem to confuse it with Oman).

I know the Japanese Glass coating has been around for quite some time, and I;ve seen the detailing shop do their work on Ferraris, an Aston Martin Vantage (was there when they did it), Porsches etc. So I know they do a good job, and if its good for a supercar, I don't doubt it will be good for my RX8... just a matter of pricing..

Curious though, why the technology hasn't permeated to other markets. Seems to be confined to Japan and to the Thailand, Malaysia and Brunei...

See I don't get what exactly the maintenance part is. Inquire as to exactly what they do for maintenance, don't let them say we just shine it up or something, get DETAILED info as to what they do during those periods.

Basically, they could just sell you a really well beading wax, then just re-apply it every 3 months.

Edit:

HOLY CRAP

I just saw the beading shots. WOW. I want some of this.

Good point. and yeah HOLY CRAP right! That's why I am keen to get it. After application, all you need is to rinse and spray off the dirt if there are no stuck on tar spots or bugs. Loose dirt will wash right off.

One thing I notice is though it doesn't give you the wet look so you'll still need nuba wax it. I'll be using my P21s 100% to layer it on top of the glaze. I'm just waiting now for my Aero body kit for my RX8 to come through before I glaze it...

Found another product of similar nature -cilajet.com. It's featured on Jay Leno's website on car care. Looks about the same type of product, except the prep work on JGlaze looks more lengthy.

I guess they removed it beacuse it was more or less a commercial for JGlaze?

I loved the beading pictures but now I can't find them any more :(
