autocrossed in the rain....

man was that a blast-arrived at BeaveRun at 10 and was the second car there. got about 15 runs in on wet pavement and even did a full 360 without knocking down any cones and went on to complete the run. Followed that with 2 sessions of fun laps on the road course with top speeds of just over 100 mph. needless to say my car is not in autopian status as I even had mud splatter on the inside B pillar. Even though having a nice shiney car is a good feeling going out and getting it splattered with dirty rain water is even more satisfying. If you've never had a chance to AX and have some place local I'd definitly encourage you to try it out.

Anyone that enjoys spirited driving owes it to themself to try autocross at least once. I always enjoyed it in the rain; didn't do much for the times, but it was fun to slide around at lower speeds.

Sounds like a lot of fun! Doing stuff like that in the rain can be very educational, and exciting enough that you don't miss the speeds of dry pavement.

Those were some good speeds to carry at Beaverun in the wet (I did my Security Driver Training there).

Yeah, Beaverun is a good facility, reasonably priced too.

Heh heh, at least you got to have their new pavement by the office. That place was a real mess before they got the asphalt down.

Awesome! What fun. It is refressing to hear of others treating their cars the way I do.

Like Accumulator said, autocrossing in the rain is a very educational experience and should be required driving for anyone with a license in my opinion.

I find it incredible that we do not teach any real car control to learner drivers, so the first time most people skid is when something horrible is happening

Me too. Six people were recently killed on a highway here because a guy started skidding in his Dodge truck. Of course he survived, but his two passengers and the four people in the Accord he hit all died (both vehicles caught on fire). Then it was found out his license had been suspended 14 times by the state and was on suspension until 2008.

We need strict driving laws and requirements to obtain a license but I fear it is only a dream. Enforcement of the current laws is an absolute joke in many areas of the country (including beautiful Hilton Head  ) and when you have people driving at excess speeds and not knowing how to control a car, innocent people become involved.

Not only is basic car control in emergency situation not taught, but much of the old school folklore that is passed down from driver to drive is detrimental in todayâ€â„¢s modern cars. It amazes me how many people still think they should âہ“pumpâ€Â the brakes on modern cars equipped with the latest ABS technology. Also, simple skills such as turning into a slide are not taught or even mentioned. While the advances in ABS, traction control, yaw control or whatever you want to call the electronic stability control have made cars more safe, the basic skills for handling a car under less than ideal conditions has really diminished. The current popularity of awd and 4-wheel drives systems also seem to have dumbed down the general driver to what these systems really permit. It does not give the SUV drive a license to drive much faster under less ideal conditions.
