Ask: Suggestion on DA and Pad

Hi, this is my 2nd post (the 1st one is in the welcome & greeting center) :)

I have a one year old metallic black car, paint is in relatively good condition. I wash the car myself once a week. Wax it once a month. Main problem are below defect water spot and very minimal of micro marring that only visible under the sunlight. I am a daily driver.

I use Meguiar's product. Some of them are:

UC, SwirlX, ScratchX 1, DC1 Paint Cleaner, DC2 Polish, Consumer Cleaner Wax, QD, UQD, NXT 2 Liquid, NXT 2.0 Paste, and several Supreme Shine MF.

I'm planning to buy a DA polisher, which is going to be my first DA. But I can not decide which DA should I choose. I'm planning to buy either Meguiar's G220v2 or PC 7424XP. I can see that both DA got a good reviews.

By using the DA, my goal is to eliminate the waterspot defect and the micro marring. Wax and polish it using my DA.

Can anyone help me to choose whether should I get Megs or PC DA. And moreover, which pad should I buy for my initial stock. I'm thinking to buy whether LC or Megs for the pad.

Thank you and your help is most appreciated! :)

Go for whatever machine is cheaper, they are both very close. I like Meg's pads but there are many other good ones. I used to recommend Meg's pads because there were really only three, and they were well color coded, now they messed it up. Lake has too many pads, I have a hangup decoder chart in my garage to figure out what pad to use.

Do you have any other recommendation besides LC and Megs Pad?

And what kind of pads should I get?

If you have water spots, you will probably need a cutting pad, polishing and a finishing pad.

For someone new to machine polishing I recommend a kit from Adam's Polishes. They have made it "puddin' simple": Use the orange product (Swirl and Haze Remover - most aggressive) on an orange pad (most aggressive), the white product (Fine Machine Polish) on the white pad, and to finish, the black product (Machine SuperWax - really a sealant) on the black pads.

When you get comfortable with the products, pads, and machine you can mix them up a little for different cut levels. After you're past the newbie stage, try other vendor's products and pads, and you'll already have a 6" backing plate.

You might find it impossible to remove certain types of waterspots via that sort of polishing. Acid rain etching can be too serious to correct that way.

You may very well have to resort to small (4") pads to to efficient/timely correction with those machines, and that will require a small backing plate to fit the smaller pads.

To keep things very simple, you could go with the Cyan (cutting) and Tangerine (polishing) pads from LC.

I'd also consider the Griot's 6" polisher; in a recent comparision Mike Phillips found it more capable than other similar machines and yeah...you would probably appreciate that.

Thanks for all the responses.

I have decided to pick the G220v2. It comes with W68DA 7" BP.

So I will just need to get the Meg's SoftBuff 2.0 Polishing + Finishing Pad. Meg's pad are quite simple for a newbie like me :)

Later on, after mastering the DA, I will look into other brand pad. Probably the LC and smaller pad.
