applying by hand and preparing paint ?

I was wondering if you can get the same shine by hand vs. orbital polisher or whatever mechanical device you use to apply wax. I dont one and i have to apply by hand so thats why i was wondering. And i know you guys say the most important part of a great shine is the way you prepare the surface before you apply the wax. What products should i use to prepare my paint for wax?
 
You will be able to get a better prepared surface IMHO with the pc. The pc has a much greater ability to cut that the hand does. YOu can remove defects by hand but it will be alot harder and take alot longer than with the pc or rotary. YOu can remove defects and prep your surface though. It just takes time and patience. Now for how to prep:

Wash - NXT or any high quality wash
Clay - clay magic kit
Paint Cleaner - if needed - meguiars deep crystal paint cleaner
Polish - to remove defects and shine - whatever polish you are comfy with
Glaze - has fillers to mask some defects / purely optional - adams BSG
Sealant - Tends to sheet more than bead water / tends to last longer - EX/P
Wax - The icing on the cake - any carnabua
