Apply Products with PC or Hand

I have a new car, i instructed the dealer not to prep it.

Is a PC necessary or hand will suffice?

Im applying AIO, SG (or other), and wax, and maybe something else in between.

I dont thinking it needs polishing.

What do you guys think?

I do everything possible by PC. I only apply Zaino & paste waxes by hand. Before I got a PC, I never got anywhere with swirl marks. After I got it, life was worth living again because I could get rid of swirl marks!:)

Hand will be just fine if you aren't trying to remove swirls. As long as the dealer respects your wishes you should be alright. Think of the PC as super fast hands. Maybe pick up a couple of the Viking Handi-Grip applicators to make life easier.

FWIW, You didn't mention it, but you'll probably want to clay your new car as well.

All by hand, or i will look into those grip applicators

Plazaman.......That's a good combo you're working with. I've been using that combo, by hand, for a long time with great results. I'm lucky.....I've been able to keep my paint swirl free. I've you have major marring, scratches or swirl marks you'll need a PC. Nothing wrong with giving your car/truck a "hand job" !!

Remember though, just because you asked them not to prep it doesn't mean it hasn't been washed before. :o

I always get it in writing that if the vehicle isn't "unmolested" then the deal's off. Some dealerships will expect you to be *so* excited about getting a new vehicle that you'll put up with anything.

Actually, I talking about long before you even set your eyes on the vehicle. They have to wash it to keep it looking somewhat new so when potential car buyers come see the new vehicles, they actually look somewhat new.

Shouldnâ€â„¢t be the case for me, I had to the order the vehicle

plazaman- you'll still have to consider the removal of the transit film. They're gonna be washing it when they do that. You can either gamble on their doing it right, or take the film off yourself. I've done it both ways, but I've never had a dealer *except my Porsche/Audi dealer* get it off without marring the paint to some extent. Most dealerships will scratch the paint *somewhere* when they take the film off, at least in my experience.

termigator- Heh heh, I'm so off the deep end with this stuff that the idea of taking a car "off the lot" doesn't even occur to me :o

I'm in the exact same boat since my mom is supposed to have new car in June. I was very strict with the dealer about absolutely no prep, had it put in writing everywhere and spoke to the manager about it.

He said when the car arrives, he will call right away and leave it with all the Rapgard intact and will be fine with me removing all or most of it right there on the lot but he must be able to inspect the paint with it removed before the car leave the premise to note any damage that might have happened in transit.

He was pretty good about it all ans seemed to understand the reasoning behind my request. And oh yeah, I toured the service department before any deal was considered. The bays can hold a lot of cars but there wasn't anything that really stood out as a red flag for me to say, "nope, gotta find a better dealer".

I forgot about the plastic sheets that cover new vehicles in transit. I don't think there's much you can do about that.:(

Sure there is.. do what I'm going to do, insist on removing it yourself.

whats a good applicator for AIO, SG, and wax? MF ok?

You got it. I've been using Pakshak mf pads and now have some new Meguiars ones which are a little narrowed but at least initially, appear to be of the same quality.

Well, back to your original question: I don't think you "need" a PC (or other polisher). Except for paint with somewhat serious issues, polishing by hand will do fine.

I use a local model polisher because it saves me time, but if you're willing to put some elbow grease (and time) into it, you can get similar results with most products IMHO.
