Apple Laptops

Well this coming week I am going to head down to the Apple store and purchase a new laptop. I've opted for the MacBook as I have no need for the Pro version.

I have read quality issues on both colors, (from 2006, not sure if this is still an issue) but I just wanted to see if anyone here had an Apple laptop and which color they would suggest? I don't mind the whole greasy look on black, because I don't mind cleaning it. But I have also read that the black finish is very fragile and may flake off.

So should I opt for white or black? Thanks guys!

Personally I like the white. Have you checked the refurb deals online (Blue Special deal tag on the front page of apple.com)? There are some real deals once in a while.

I too have a black one and could not be happier with my choice. If you are new to MACS.... you're going to kiss your own *** for buying one.

They are a superior machine in every way, hands down. I've been using MACS for 5 years now and have never had a catastrophic hardware or software failure. All of my components simply work w/o any fuss whatsoever.

I purchased the MacBook about a year ago. It replaced my G4, which I broke one day after 4 years of flawless activity. I still have the G4 in fact. I just have to lean the screen against the wall to use it.

White, its more traditional for Macs.

True, but they're slowly moving off the norm. Black iPod (and silver, blue, red), black MacBook, Black/Silver iPhone. However, black does come with a premium. The Black Macbook is the top of the line and $200 more than the White, with only a 160gb Hard drive difference. Tough decision, but I'd go with a White Macbook.

I'm not a Mac fan, but if I had to get one I'd want it in black. I have had both white and black iPods and I prefer the black. I've also seen people with white ibooks (or whatever the name is of the older models) and they start to look grungy. I felt disgusted touching their keyboards.

I'm pretty careful about my possesions (iPod still is in its original plastic wrap), but I still found ways to drop, bang, or scratch my laptop. In any case, I would never treat it as if it was my car's paint because after all, it's just a computer.

Just pick the color that you like the most. I wouldn't worry about whether one color was more prone to chipping than the other. In less than 3-4 year's time, you will have moved on to another computer/laptop.

Hey is it worthwhile getting a macbook right now with leopard looming on the horizon? Im going to get one for school this semester but I figured it would be worthwhile to wait until october or whatever? Josh, what are your thoughts about that, arent you in a IT career too?

Thanks everyone for the input. More than likely I think I will be going with the black, less than 6 months ago I went to the Apple Store and picked out a white one for my grandparents since they had no idea what to buy. I have used Apple's before and absolutely love them, I cannot wait to replace the Vaio I am currently using.

Hondaph00l: I am very tempted to wait for Leopard to come out but I have been waiting and waiting and then the date got pushed back. An upgrade is going to run $130, not sure if students get discounts on that as well but I basically need to replace my laptop soon. My battery is dead so I always have to be near an outlet and now whenever I plug it in I have to move the batter just right so I can turn the laptop on, it is a pain. But I will be upgrading to Leopard when it is released.

My main reason for getting an Apple is because like you said I work with computers on a daily basis; and when I come home I just want things to work. I also love the Mac operating system and how flawless it is.

Will be sure to take pictures when I get it!

I like Mac's too, however, they are not without their problems. Go read a mac help forum sometime.

I am again on the rebound as to what color to get..I found a nice laptop bag I want to get (tan) but at a price of $200 I can't see myself paying a premium price for a black laptop over white and then getting the laptop bag as well.

In the end it will come down to what appeals most to me when I walk in the store, but because money doesn't grow on trees for college students...it may very well be white now instead of black.

Do you really need a $200 bag when there's way many alternatives that looks just as good, if not better, for much cheaper? Plus, I don't know if I'd want a bag that screams out "Hey, steal my bag, I have a macbook inside!"

If you were to ever sell your laptop for whatever reason, I would be willing to bet you'd get just a tiny fraction of what you paid for that bag. I think the $200 premium for your preferred color is money better spent.

But it's your money, not mine.

BlackElantra,

You make some good points. I guess I see it as I would rather spend my money on a quality bag that I can also use to carry my school books and get more use out of it.

The one I used the past two years, while nice...is not enough room and is starting to wear pretty good.

I am however watching a Kenneth Cole messenger bag on ebay and it is at $6 right now - brand new. So Im going to be watching this closely as well, I'm not out to spend $200 on a bag but I just want a quality leather one.

Thanks guys

Buy the laptop first. No sense buy the bag and can't afford the laptop. I think a cheap bag with a nice black laptop sounds better than a cheap laptop and nice bag. :chuckle:

I didn't know $1,200 was cheap :nana: I appreciate your guys' opinions though. I have decided to go with this bag to save some money.

But I still think I am going to wait until I get to the store to see what color stands out the most...should have the laptop by Friday!

Thanks again guys!

They might not have the greatest selection and probably won't be as cheap as eBay, but I recall seeing some Kenneth Cole laptop bags in places like TJ Maxx before if you're looking for that brand.

I may have missed something, but are you a current student or entering school? If so, you can get the educational pricing on everything. The EDU price for OS upgrades is currently $69.00. Also, there is an education program going on now where you can get a Nano for free with purchase of a computer.

Try Apple Store for Education

Discounts on hardware are pretty minor, a hundred bucks or so. But, you can usually save a really good chunk of change by getting your upgrades (RAM and HD) through a third party. This is what I do for my personal machines and for all the machines in my department (I spec out all of our Macs). We usually get the bare bones RAM and HD configuration and then order our upgrades through someone like OWC: Apple Mac G4 upgrades, Laptop Batteries, Memory, Drives.

Hope that helps.

Yeah I have been a student now for two years, I used my discount last year when my grandparents bought theres. All together walking out the door we ended up saving around $400 with what they purchased.

I plan to upgrade my free Nano to the video for $50 and get the $200 mail in rebate back. Just ordered my bag tonight and will hopefully get the check in the mail tomorrow so I can go pick out my laptop!
