Anything to watch for on a '92 Quad-4 engine?

I've never detailed an engine in a car this old before (1992 Pontiac Grand AM) and I am a little concerned about the electrical stuff due to age. Anything to watch out for on an older Quad-4? This is for a customer's car I'll be working on in the morning.

Thanks. If it were a 98 or newer I wouldn't hesitate but the extra age makes me a bit worried. :o

No problems when I was cleaning the engine my my 1990 Accord when I had it. Of course, I knew that engine backwards and forwards.

I rarely do anything other than a wipedown on engines anymore. Just not worth the liability, IMO.

True. The more I've thought about it, I think I'll get what I can by hand with some APC and a shop rag, and call it good. I've got one of those "Steam Shark" machines so maybe even that will help on the manifold cover/etc. This car is a piece of utter crap anyways so what do I care :o

You know what they say, "you can polish a turd, but...." :xyxthumbs

Hey! The Oldsmobile Quad-4 made up to 190hp back then, when a Corvette made 250hp. I think the Grand Am eventually had an option to get the 180hp version. :-P

I agree with Scottwax. I have cleaned the engine in my 91 Accord several times without covering anything up and with no problems. Only real issue on other cars is usually the ignition system and sensors. If I remember, the recent Quad 4's had coil on plug and it it was hidden under a cover to boot. I had a friend that had a Sunfire GT and we cleaned that engine no problem. If the older engine is the same design, you may be OK. The sensors on that engine are all concentrated toward the front, so clean that area carefully.

yeah, well, I drove it a couple miles tonight to take it to the pressure sprayer wash bays (better sprayers than my electric pressure washer) and I felt like I was in a sardine can with little or no power whatsoever. :down Not very solid on the road; actually had me scared at first.
