Anyone else having much problems with the mothers clay?

I needed clay earlier because I was i na pinch, I thought I had some of my clay-magic clay, but the local parts store does not carry it, so I picked up a mothers CA gold bar instead. I got it out, and started using it, but it seemed to fall apart pretty quickly:nixweiss Also it didn't seem to grab as much as I had hoped...anyone else having these problems? Or am I doint something wrong? Is it possible to over lubricate?

Sounds like too much - you want enough so the bar doesn't drag, but not so much it's running off the panels.

We don't recommend soap water BTW, it seems to make the clay fall apart.

If you squeeze the clay, does lube run out? That's a sure sign of too much lubricant.

I've used the soap water many times before, but this time since the kit came with the CA gold quick shine clay lubricant, I used that..I was probably using too much, but can't recall having the liquid come out when I kneaded it.

Does it fall apart when you're kneading it or dragging it across the paint? Sounds like the bar could've dried out from not being packaged correctly. I would return it for a new one and see what happens.

Like other have said, this is surprising. I use Mothers clay regularly, and have never had this problem (except when I made the stupid mistake of using a too-strong soap/water DIY lube). In fact, it's one of my favorite clays.

Listen to Uncle Forrest on this one. :up

I have never had this happen with any of the Mothers clay bars I have used. I have had this happen with other brands but not mothers. Mothers clay bars are my favorite clay bars by far.

That's weird. I've never had clay fall apart--but then again I've never used Mother's clay. If it was a few bucks cheaper I'd give it a try, though. :)

yea, i gotta say thats pretty weird too. ive had the mother's clay bar for a while now, and its been working out pretty good. it hasnt fallen apart, and its soft. i find it weird that it falls apart. maybe you had some kinda "defected" clay?

Interesting, as I've found that the ClayMagic bar has a tendency to fall apart...not the rubbery Mothers bar.

Exactly my experience.

And, I do often use soapy water solution, but the Mother's product stays intact. Clay Magic pulls/breaks apart even when using their supplied lube.

Comparing the two products to long time children's toys...

Mother's = Silly putty. You can pulllll and streeeetch

Clay Magic = Play Dough

ehh i just clayed on saturday with mothers clay bar, i used the soap and water combo and after i clayed my hood the whole bar started to fall apart i had to throw it out. I guess it only works with the lube that it comes with

Heh, I have a Mother's clay bar that fell apart. I ran out of the included lube, so I used soap and water. It started falling apart, so I figured I didn't have enough lube, so I sprayed more.. still didn't work, so I gave up. I guess I was using too much of the wrong type of lube :) I use it on my wheels now.

Bought a Clay Magic bar and used it on two cars w/ their lube and maybe a little soap & water at the end when I ran out of the lube. I guess I was more careful because I didn't have any problems with it.

I've found that I can avoid the "squishies" (clay getting logged with lube) by drying the clay before folding. After doing a section, if I think I need to fold the dirt to the middle and knead the clay flat again, I'll first dab it on a clean MF towel (or even just tap it on my shirt) to remove any excess lube. I haven't had a problem with clay breaking down on me since I started doing that, and I haven't really changed anything else about how I clay (same amount of lube, varies between QDs I have on hand and the occasional soapy water in a spray bottle).

I'm really surprised to hear you're having trouble with Mother's (or even ClayMagic) clay bars. I've used both of them -- and Autopia's clay bar -- with great success, even before I started studying this issue. The only time I had a problem was when I read folks making their own soap-and-water lube, and tried to do it myself. The clay fell apart miserably. I finally figured out that I had used WAY too much soap for the water. (Apparently, you need to use only about 1 oz. soap per 16 oz water, or something like that. I had used WAY TOO MUCH soap.) At that point, I decided that since I was only working on my own cars -- not detailing professionally -- I was better-off just using the lube supplied with the clay. Since then, I've never had a problem. I'm truly perplexed to hear that you folks are having such a problem.

Good possibility. I bought a clay bar once that wasn't properly sealed. Was so dried out that it basically disintegrated when using it.
