Any Target / Varmint Shooters?

I just tweaked out my Ruger M77 MKII VLE .223 I bought Leupold high base rings/bases and after tons of swearing and troubleshooting, I realized the rings were slightly out of alignment. This was really weird because they are machined and very high quality. I just got a set of Ruger rings and they are working fine. I've got a 10-40X50 MM scope and got some great groupings from 150 yds. I reload all my ammo with 40 and 50 GR V-Max bullets with Reloader 10 powder. Getting ready for a big trip praire dog shooting in ND.

Any other target or shooters on DC??!!

Mike

All my targets are made out of pitch. I like to shoot trap and of course that sport uses clay targets. I reload all the shells I shoot.

I shot combat pistol courses some years back. Took several trophies at it too, I supose having a dad that was a police range instructor didn't hurt me any ;)

I don't often get the chance anymore, but I have liked playig around with long range (100 yards or more) pistol shooting. My best was scoring on a gallon milk jug at 100 yards.

I'd like to try my Kimber 1911 out at 100 yards. Doubt that I would hit a milk jug, but I'd keep shooting until I just couldnt stand it anymore. :D My glock wouldnt have a prayer at that kind of distance, but that thing is a workhorse....so reliable. I dont do any hunting, but I really enjoy going to the range and taking out some targets. I like rifles too, but it's been a long time since I have fired one...pistols are more of a challenge. Glad to see there are some shooters on this board.

Mike,

Many years ago, (many, many years ago :D ) when I first got out of the Corps, I did some competitive Large-Bore Bench Rest shooting. Specifically, a wildcat 338 Winchester Mag necked down to 30 caliber... built with a Hart barrel.

At 500 yards, with 220 grain Sierra Boat-Tail bullets and a 20X Urtel scope, the rifle (not always the shooter :D ) would consistenly group in a silver dollar! :bigups

Wouldn't make much of a "chuck gun" though! :lmfao

Why? Just because there wouldn't be anything but a greasy smear left.... :lmfao

Don - what pistol did you use? Iron sights? That's a heck of a shot at 100yds!!

Mike

I did it with a Smith & Wesson M 39-2 9mm, iron sights. It wasn't a "one shot, one kill" type thing, it took a few shots to "walk" the rounds into the jug.

I have also made some good long range shots with a Ruger MKII .22 w/10" bull-barrel. THAT thing shoots like a rifle

Boss, I would love to shoot that gun! 220gr would be a bit of a wallup! I suppose after the smoke cleared you have to get out the spotting scope to see what you hit, because at 500yds and a 20X scope, things look rather small! That is crazy!

Don, those MKII .22 with the heavy barrel are sure fun to shoot. My buddy has one and you don't even come close to flinching when you're shooting. Great gun!

Actually at 500 yards, you could get a good aim point... at 1000 yards it was a different story. :D The Uterl scope had good adjustability... that was very important when shooting at those ranges in various weather conditions.

P.S. I had a Baush & Lomb 20X to 60X (I think) spotting scope.

Back in my HS days my summers were spent hunting groundhogs. The summer before my sr. year I shot 143 'hogs. I used a 700 Rem BDL with a 3-9 Weaver scope in a .222 Remington. I used to pride myself in head shots. That was 25 years ago, since then my weapon of choice has changed to a bow, and my game of choice is the whitetail deer. I've done some 3-D and indoor shooting competitively as well and won some trophies doing so.

I shot JOAD (Junior Olympic Archery Development) in my JHS days. The team I was on won the MidWest Championship back in the early 80s
