any advice on debadging

does anyone have any experience with debadging the emblems from a car?

I hear fishing line is great ... but what can i use for the extra adhesive?

i used fishing line and wrapped it around my fingers and got in between the badge and adhesive, and used a saw motion back and forth until it came off. if there is any residue from the double sided tape leftover, try pushing with your thumb and it should ball up and come right off. finally, take a bug & tar remover and wipe away anything that you may have missed...

First, I would use a blow dryer to warm up the glue. And then you could try the backside of a butter knife with duct tape wrapped around it. And next, use goo-gone to get rid of all the left over glue. Just put on some more wax/sealant if you car is protected already.

Heat up the emblems with a heat gun or blow dryer first. Then use dental floss is a sawing motion. Once they are off, use goo gone on the excess adhesive. You're going to want to wash the goo gone off afterwards, and polish/wax the area since it has never been protected before. If your vehicle is older I wouldn't recommend this incase your paint has faded. I debaged mine when it had about 30 miles on it.

goodluck!

I shaved off emblems that had been on for 3 years...

I used fishing line and a steamer... easy..any remaining adhesive was removed using the steamer and a clean terry

I've done it many times. My method..

- Park in the sun if possible for a couple of hours to heat things up well

- Drizzle some 3M adhesive remover (any auto parts store should have it) over the top of the emblem

- Heat carefully with a heat gun (or blow dryer)

- Pry up a corner using a plastic putty knife

- Peel off emblem

- Use 3M adhesive remover to remove remaining adhesive

- Prep and wax as necessary

3M Adhesive Cleaner. Works great. Comes in a red and white can. You should be able to find it at an auto body supply shop.

Another vote for heating with hair dryer and using dental floss and/or 3M Adhesive Remover. I've had brand new vehicles that "ghosted" where the emblems had been and older vehicles that had no such problems; it's a crap-shoot but I still do it on almost all of our vehicles. Often the ghosting/color differences/etc. will fade over time.

Heh heh, make sure they're just glued on first, if they're glued *and* pinned you'll have to either a) have the holes welded up and the panel repainted or b) glue them back on; sticking them back on without new adhesive makes for insecure mounting and water leaks around the pins.

+1 for the heat, fishing line/dental floss method. Gore Tex dental floss works great very strong and thin. Also, if you can't find 3M AR Stoner's Tarminator works great to get the glue off.

When I debadged my car I used dental floss cause it's coated with a waxy material. After I got the badges off I simply pushed/pulled and peeled the remaining double sided tape off with my fingers. Once it was all off I proceeded to polish the remaining residue with VM. Here's a current pic of my debadging job, it's sporting HTEC followed by OP and finished off with CG 50/50 with CG Synthetic QD as a topper and I must say, I love this combo and the outcome on my car.

This is what it looked like before:

Here's two with my badges removed using my method posted above....

The "Accord" and "EX" were on the pass side trunk lid above and below the tailight. I didn't take the "H" off because it's in with pins

I concur

Now I just gotta put the PC/rotary down and get my sideskirts and Nascar wing painted body color. I'm just painting my OEM skirts, but my wing is aftermarket. I already sanded it down, I did that the day I got it (at least three months ago), maybe I'll go buy the primer and paint this weekend since it's gonna be so hot, should help the paint dry quicker which will help the process go by faster. And once I get that done that'll be motivation for me to take the skirts off and get them painted so I can put the wing on.

Dental floss will work also.

Yep, wax coated floss. Just warm-up the badges first. You can use naptha or 3M Prep-Sol to remove the adhesive, or use the 3M adhesive removal product as well.

Whichever chemical you use, just make sure you glaze it so the paint does not become soft from the chemicals.

rfk76- Sounds like you still have a fair amount of work to do :D

MotorCity- That looks good too!

I think I'd want the "H" on there anyhow. The way the trim strip is notched for it would look weird without the "H" IMO.

I left the "Flying M" on my MPV's hatch even though they were welding up the holes for the other badges anyhow, just looked better IMO. I took *all* the stuff off the S8's trunk lid and while *I* like it, most would say it's not as attractive looking as my wife's A8 where we left the Audi rings; sometimes a *little* badging looks better than none at all, other times it looks better with the "nosed and decked" look, just depends on the vehicle.

I left the "H" on because I love Honda's and don't want to be mistaken as otherwise..

The chrome trim peice was something I actually added on just a couple weeks ago..

I have seen them before but never with the little dip as you mentioned for the "H".. to me that dip chaged it from an aftermarket looking peice to a factory one.

But back on topic, the steamer I used worked wonders.. with not using the adhesive remover it was one less chemical I had to use on my finish

I do. I'm gonna get up tomorrow morning and detail my mom's car and then i'm gonna make a trip to the chevy dealer to get some paint so I can get busy. I guess I should pick up some bulldog adhesive promoter for my side skirts while i'm at it.
