I have a black Excursion I want to detail. I've read and searched the forums for what might be best. What I found were a lot of different oppinions. So far I think what I might want to try is: nxt car wash, the klasse twins, and I'm undecided on a topper. I know that klasse is an acrylic and I'm unsure of what exactly wood be best to put on top. I'd welcome any advice. Also, I'm a unsure of what i need to make sure my paint stays in good condition. I've heard about some waxs drying out pain. Can someone clarify. Also, I plan to use a pc. It will be my first time.
Thanks in advance.

I have a black car and I would after wash clay the truck to get it ready for the Klasse. Since you are using a PC I would also use a swirl remover like PB SSR line up to cut what is on the clear coat. These two steps will help setup your CC for the Klasse twins and give you a much better finish. I would then top with carnuba paste wax

Fire if this is something you plan on doing today saturday and don't have all the products or pads you might want to go down to costa mesa the carnuba store aka marco distribution is on the east side of the 55 fwy where it ends. He has alot of meguires products.Adams polishes and waxes is at the costa mesa swap meet also or his shop is in torrance. They should be able to do a visual assessment with you and what you need.
Good Luck.

I have a black car also and love the Klasse twins on it. I recommend one more step that I have just used and fell absolutely in love with. Sonus Paintwork Cleanser. This stuff is awesome. I applied it with a Sonus blue pad and the whole car looked brand new. Now, this is given you don't have any paint defects of any kind to remove other than minor waterspots, scuffs, and that sort of thing. If you have any kind of marring or defects you will definitely need a polish first. I am just going to assume that your finish is near perfect so I would SPC, AIO, SG x 2 or 3, Souveran. Your black Excursion will look like a million bucks when you're done!

By the way, that sucker is huge so plan on it taking you a couple days to complete. Take your time and work the products in really well.

I detailed a black expedition last week with a PC and used the following

wash
clay magic-fine
PB SSR2.5 yellow pad
Meg. Speed glaze- yellow pad
PB's EX

The owner said it looked better than new. This was a 7 hr. job with no breaks at all. I was beat .

First off thanks for all the replies so far. Pat, I thought I could use the AIO like a polish, what would you recomend to fix light to medium swirls. Also, Is marring and swirls the same thing? Oh, and one more thing. Any tips on doing the roof of this beast?

OK, How is this for my final plan?
I think I will:

wash
clay
ssr 2.5
ssr 1
AIO
SG x 3
souveran

Should I use a paint cleanser in this process and if so should it come before or after the ssr's? I thought that the AIO would be good enought as I paint cleanser and Polish, Should I use a pure paint cleanser before the AIO and then a pure polish? Should a pure Polish go before the AIO or after? I've seen people use a lot of different combos but sometimes it seems some are either redundant or some negate others. I'm very new so I'm sure I could be wrong.

I think I'm close to something here and I just want to make sure I can maximize the results with the products I choose. Thanks in advance again!

Good questions, and I can't really answer it unfortunately.

I admit that I get a bit confused over what people use AIO for as well. Does it just clean, or can it also remove swirls? From what I understand, AIO supposedly does NOT contain abrasives, which would mean that it wouldn't remove swirl marks. However, there are those who believe that AIO actually does contain some abrasives since it does remove minor swirl marks.

AIO supposedly does not contain abrasives but someone (cannot remember who and if it was on this board or Autopia) recently posted pictures of swirled paint that was repaired using AIO.

firefli,

You definitely have a good list of products and they're in the right order. AIO preps the surface for SG by cleaning the paint and ensures proper bonding of SG. No other paint cleanser is needed when using AIO.

First, AIO is not an abrasive, but the action of a machine and pad against the surface MAY eliminate minor swirling.

Me? I'd use a fine polish and finishing pad before applying the AIO. The proper use of a 500 watt halogen light will allow you to monitor your polishing efforts.

Allow the SG to cure (after removal) before applying a carnauba topper.

Get a ladder!

I would also suggest that you use a black car wax. Topoftheline.com makes some awesome products. I personally would use Hi Temp's Midnight Gloss enhancer and Black Carnauba wax from Top of the Line or your favorite black wax. Really will make it deep.
