Another G35, but with a twist. My most successful yet (thanks to Autopia!)

Gonna be a picture heavy post guys.

Another black G35, this time an '03 sedan with 141k on it. The owner just bought it, took delivery on Tuesday and dropped it off here 2 hours later. He basically said "DO whatever it takes, I'll pay by the hour". He says he is going to mod it heavily so we'll see. Anyway I checked it out under the halogens and I can't lie, it wasn't totally hideous. It was bad, lots of swirls, some weird long deep scratches on each side (almost like it was driven through a bush or something), but I've definitely seen worse.

I told him it'd be 6-7 hours of total work give or take. Boy was I wrong.

As you can see it took longer. I'm pretty familar with G35 paint, since my car is a black G35 and I've worked on dozens of them, so my initial process was going to be Menzerna IP/orange via PC, Opt Polish/white via PC, Clearkote VM/grey via PC, CMW, drinks. I've done this combo on my own car a couple times, as well as literally 5 or 6 other black G35s without a problem

Started off fine, IP was making short work of swirls and scratches, it was hazing but I'm used to that. Seemed kind of like it was hazing a lot but I wasn't worried. If you read the other thread you'll see that my next step was the kicker. *Nothing* I was trying was getting the hazing out. I must have tried 10 combos. In the end after some help in the other thread I tried FPII on a grey at speed 3 with no pressure, and it worked. I did the whole car like this twice. The lesson here for me was that sometimes it isn't about more abrasion, more speed, more pressure, but a heck of a lot less. So the final process was:

Menzerna IP on orange via PC

A billion attempts to remove haze

FPII on a grey via PC, speed 3, no pressue, slooooow x2

RMG on a blue via PC

Clearkote CMW

Poorboys NL on trim, armor all in wells, VM on glass, Never Dull/AIO on exhaust. Megs insane on tires.

I personally think the car was repainted at some point and the owner didn't know about it. He says he'll find out. :nixweiss

After all the trial and error I'd say it was my most successful detail yet. The car is almost completely marring free now aside from some stone chips in front. The owner was out of his mind. I stuck to my estimate and charged him for 6 hours. :)

Took these during IP to show the haze and before/after. IP'd area is on top, not polished is below.

The haze I was left with:

Excellent job!

What do you suggest for OEM G35 black paint? I have IP, FPII, 106ff and 085. orange, green and blue P2 pads. I'm thinking of IP/RMG mix with orange and then 106ff/RMG mix with green. Then prime/AJ/trigger as his car is parked outside at the airport when he works.

that amazing..the only thing more amazing is that for an 03 it has 141k kilometers which equates to 88k miles...thats alot of miles, the car is actually in good shape for the mileage

How is the condition? For most black G35's with moderate swirls/marring I go IP/rmg on an orange followed by FPII or 106ff on a white (in your case green), then I either hit it with RMG and top it with a wax or if I am going with a sealant I might do one more polishing step (FPII or VM on a green/blue, for example) then top with a sealant. 9/10 times this will leave you smiling. :)

Apparently the last owner was on a 36 month lease and drove almost 200km a day to work and back. :scared: I guess since it's almost all highway miles it's in good shape for the mileage except the front bumper is pretty rough.

Great job.

Just Curious, how did the G35 front bumper and hood look after all those miles. The ones that I have seen look sandblasted with numerous paint chips.

Picus,

Are you using Propel or LC pads?

For this one it was all LC or Sonus DAS. I've not used Propel pads.

The hood was ok, the front of it had some chips that I filled in and sanded. The bumper is a goner, totally sandblasted. Let me see if I have a picture. Yep.

It's a bummer too, because the rest of the car is in great shape. I think maybe he is going to get a kit though, so who knows.

GREAT JOB!!! Yea's my mom's infiniti I30 is in gorgeous shape but the rocks chips on the front end takes away from it! Surprized you got so much haze after IP....I never had that problem before on black. Maybe the G35's paint is too soft??

Whoa whoa beeep beeep back the truck up! Everyone, I call bluff! I say the real story is that the before are the 140K G and teh afters are Picus' G!!! Come on now! No way those afters are of the 140K G!!! LOL JK JK

That'd be fine by me. His looks nicer now; and my G has over 100k on it now anyway! :D

BTW... how do you like your Panasonic plasma display? :goodjob :kewlpics

Love it. We've actually had it over 2 years now, so it's an older model. Still going strong; kept the box in case we move. :)

Thanks guys.

Great job, I love the hell out of IP but when it doesn't cut it I go to DACP or equal. Sometimes IP just wont get there, I usually know after the first pass, but when it does it is by far my favorite polish. I just used IP/Rotary on a black truck and a white pad, and I needed no final polishing, it was flawless. Just for cleaning purposes I followed with AIO but I could have when straight to wax.

'03 sedan with 141k on it.

Am I the only one that saw this!!??! I thought I was going pretty quick with an 03.5 at 90k!!!!

Unbelievable work picus!! It looks like you knocked off 100k from that odometer with that detail!!!

:bow :bow :bow

Wow, all that hard work paid off! Beautiful black paintwork on that G35!! Really a great job!

Sadly, my '03 sedan with only 40K miles has a front bumper that looks a lot like that one too.

Try a really find polish like optiumum compound and a polishing pad, and use lots of pressure, work it slowly. Then go over with very little pressure and most of the haze should be gone.
