Ad Blockers?

I've been using Norton Internet Security for some time. One of the nice features (despite a lot of annoying ones) was the ad blocking, which blocks banner ads and such. They even had a statistics window that showed (among other things) how much time you had saved from not downloading ads.

Now, poof, that feature is gone from NIS 2007 (I'm not talking about pop-up blockers, it still has that). Anybody have a suggestion? The other security suites don't really seem to advertise (pardon the pun) this feature, and add-on software seems to be shareware type programs. Is there a good ad blocker or another suite that has this feature?

I used to use AdBlock too (I use firefox), but was tired of the way it added even more lag to multiple tab openings on my FF. Seems others don't have the problem, but I always did... so I searched for an alternative, and found it.

The best part is that it is completely browser independent and VERY light on resources! So it works with *any* browser and doesn't slow down the system.

It's also written by the community, and I think you can nab the source code if you want, too, so its safe.

Check it out, I think you'll like it :)

Oh and a suggestion... dump anything related to Norton bloatware :D

Dump IE and try Firefox. :secret

+2.......i recently uploaded AVG Free and Adware, in lieu of Norton (which I havent removed yet). I still have about 320 days left on my subscription so I guess I will utilize it......

I also use Firefox with the AdBlock extension, but also coupled with AdBlock Filterset.G which gives more blocking or protection, I guess. Some websites are smart and host the ads on their own server, so if you block pictures and ads from that domain, you probably won't see the normal non-ad pictures of theirs, so that is the only bad thing, really.

Opera with speed dial ftw.

Ditto. I'm using Opera with speed dial and love it. I rarely use IE any longer. Opera has built in ad blocking, so I rarely ever get a popup or anything like that. And, the speed dial feature is very nice and unique! Plus, I love its ability to open "QuickStarts" which opens as many of your favorite sites as you like on startup (I think I have like 9 or 10 that open at one time upon first launch).

Opera all the way!

Norton indeed used to be a monstruosity, eating memory faster than you could add it.

I suggest you try Norton 360. It's a complete rewrite and does not use separate programs as most suites do. It fits nicely in an average PC, even under Vista.

Probably too much of a hassle just to block ads, but if security is your main concern and blocking those annoying ads I would suggest running a virtual machine and using the following free Virtual Appliance:

JanusVM

For $50 you can download the full Version of VM Workstation and install a free Linux OS along with this appliance.

I am currently running Windows Server 2003 on my Macbook and it works great, will be downloading a Linux OS tonight to try out this appliance myself. Figure a one time $50 fee for access to all these great open source appliances is worth it rather than updating the software every year.

Just my .02

Edit: After re-reading your post, I am not sure if this appliance has the feature you are looking for. I will let you know thought after I install it!
