Accident

I was rear ended by an old SAAB while sitting at a red light on Saturday. The SAAB slid in the snow right into my rear bumper.

The SAAB earned itself $2,300 in damage. My car $661.

When I saw the damage, I said, "Ah, that's nothing, what could it cost -$400"? Not according to Mitchell Estimating System which I jumped on today at a friends shop.

No injuries luckily.

The driver of the other car had a baby in the car and it was snowing hard. I figured I wouldn't bust her stones and just take her info and call her another day when I had time to deal with this.

Luckily she was honest.

The day of the $250 (or $400) accident is long gone...

Yeah, everyone just replaces with new. If you could find a shop that would just patch it and repaint it would be cheaper but most shops are just going to toss a new bumper on.

Where is David Fermani....

I remember writing these for $225-300 back in 199x using Mitchell.

Those days are over. 1 tiny scratch on a bumper starts at $350 these days. Don't underestimate the damage to your vehicle until the bumper is removed. There could easily be rear body/floor/reinforcement/absorber damage too.

Did you write to replace the cover or is it repairable? I take it the Saab's insurance company is paying the claim? Watch out for Aftermarket parts.....

Just a repair and refinish.

You know we can always call the adjuster back for round 2 once that cover comes off!

I'm hoping nothing is wrong with the impact absorbers or the actual bumper. That cover was always tweaked like that in the center.
