Every so often I test out new products and techniques on test panels (scrap bumpres, hoods, etc...)
Anyways, I pulled out this bumper (black, unknown make/model) and all sorts of weird **** has been happening.
On the first half of it, I was wetsanding with 3000. I made, maybe 4 or 5 strokes and when I looked, I found that the edge lip of the bumper had a SMALL white/cloudy dot on it. I figured the clear must have been really thin in that area, and I'd accidently knicked it while wetsanding.
Then I got out my cyclo and SIP and polished the bumper. When I came to that white spot (very very small spot), every single pass I made with the cyclo enlarged the spot, until now it looks like this:
Before I ran the cyclo over it, it was maybe 1/10 the size of that, then after 3-4 passes over it, it turned into that size.
Weirdness doesn't stop there.
I went to the other half of the bumper, no wetsanding, just used cyclo + powergloss + moderate pressure on it. After 2 passes with the cyclo (i.e., back forth, up down, back forth, up down) I looked at the area and I had gone through the clearcoat, through the PAINT, and right into the primer (or whatever the heck is below the paint).
I can, quite literally, pick the paint right off with my fingernail right now at that spot :wow:
So, okay, stupid question time - *** is up with that bumper.
I'm 99% certain a cyclo can't do that much damage - I even grabbed my powergloss again, yellow cutting pad, and held the cyclo in 1 spot on the same bumper for a minute, applying max. pressure. Dusted the area off and no damage there, so I'm certain it's not the cyclo or PG.....
