Hello:

I have a 2-month-old G35 Coupe.

Recently, every time I turn on the A/C a "smelly rag" odor is smelled in the A/C breeze.

It goes away after a few minutes; or my nose gets used to it ;-(

Can any body help???

damp piping sounds like the problem for a 2-month old car, but it has a tiny chance of being an already dirty air filter. just tell them to check it all

There was a thread about a similar problem in the past someone had, and one of the suggestions was to not run the AC right up to when the car is shut off. Turn off the AC and just run the fan for a few minutes prior to arrival, so that the condensation will drain properly. That will prevent mildew buildup.

I haven't heard of that problem on such a new car, but I did have two cars which developed a musty odor from the heating/AC after 2-3 years. The first dealer (Pontiac) gave it a "Frigi-Fresh" treatment, which cured the problem and is still problem-free 3 years later. I recently had the same problem with a 2 year old Chrysler and asked if they did "Frigi-Fresh" - yes, they did. Seems to be a common fix from dealers if you have the same problem that I did, both were covered under warranty.

What is a Frigi-Fresh?

Even though I'm pretty much a do-it-yourselfer whenever possible, I leave this job to the dealer - you need to know where to drill the holes in the air ducts. The last dealer wrote on the invoice "Frigi-Freshed" as a process - it seems most dealers know what you're talking about if you ask them if they can do a "Frigi-Fresh" to fix the musty odor problem.

If you want to do it yourself, take a look at:

http://www.bgprod.com/autoair.html (you can also do a Google search for "frigi-fresh")

As I understand the process, small hole(s) are drilled at strategic places in the duct distribution, like near the evaporator core and heating core. A "fogging" tube (like the "straw" from a WD-40 spray can, but with a sealed end and multiple holes along the sides). This fogs what I believe is a mildewcide throughout the vent system and must leave something behind because I can tell you from experience it doesn't reoccur.

Good luck. I suggest if it's under warranty, just ask the dealer if they can do a "Frigi-Fresh".

As mentioned, the mildew in the dash unit is the culprit and is a 10 minute fix with the sterilization kit.

The drain may be, but doesn't necessarily have to be blocked to cause the odor problem.

You can get the kits at practically any car dealer. :up

I haven't tried this brand in particular but that's the same theory as all the rest. Generally you spray in the direction of the air intake which is usually the vent in the cowl up in the firewall or up in the hood area of the outside of the car and then put additional squirts in the interior vents. But most of the real "good" is done through the intake. Wurths is good stuff, though, generally.
