A BMW Z3 with fun swirls and asphalt!

Got a call a week ago from a guy wanting his Z3 detailed... 7 years old, garaged, only driven in sunny weather, and 11k on the clock. He washes it himself.

Exterior only on this, and it turned out to be what I thought it would...and worse. The minimal sunny driving lead me to believe that there wouldn't be much in the way of bonded contaminants, so claying was a breeze... it was. The washing himself part scared me because we all know what most people think of when they wash it themselves :shocked Swirl city it was. The paint was a PITA ... I tried 6 different combos of pads and polish before I came up with a winner. The worst part was the tar... and asphalt and concrete... I have never seen anything like it... it looks like he drove down a freshly paved asphalt road and then concrete. Tar removers did nothing... it laughed at them. My saving grace was an old piece of clay, and running the hose as lube. I couldn't get it all, but got 95% of it. The clay was disgusting, it was as if I had dropped it in gravel. I need to take a pic of it :o

Final process was:

wash

clay

DACP with a cutting pad followed by OP with a polishing pad.

OCW

#38 on the tires, Hyper Dressing in the wells.

Total time: 5 hours

On with the pics!

The swirls:

The rear deck is more what the whole car looked like.... or worse:

This was after I had already started on it... :nervous2: It was horrible. I had to do a little and then brush (yes, brush the rocks and asphalt out of the clay from the wells  ) the clay off, kneed it, and so on.

After working on it you can see I had gotten most of it out, more to do!

Other side of it almost cleaned out:

After polishing (it needed one more pass with OP to get those pesky 2% remaining swirls you can see here, but I forgot to take more pics :o )

Nice comeback!

That sucker was disastrous! I hate tar like that. You should try some Goof Off next time...It's not great for the paint, but for horrific jobs like that, proves beneficial.

I'm sorry to ask. I'm new here.

Can someone translate:

"DACP with a cutting pad followed by OP with a polishing pad. OCW"

Thanks

Thanks all :)

Sean: Thanks for the tip, I'll try it next time... Stoner's and Autoglym tar removers didn't dent it. Glad I brought an old piece of clay!

Bbasso: I hope so, they were leaving for Chicago when I started, they are suppose to be back tomorrow, so I hope to hear from him :)

Oh, here is a quick camera phone pic of the clay after those wheel wells... it's the regular blue Clay Magic :soscared:

I've had a few Bimmers come through the shop for reconditioning, but that fender well was way beyond what I've seen. One of the worst was a beautiful white 545i that the previous owner ran over some fresh highway striping paint....and allowed it to dry for months. Tough stuff.

Congrat's on bringing the BMW back to beautiful condition!
