98 Red Diablo vs 01 Z8 BMW..... Roadster Editions

This was my first BMW Z8 and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I was very impressed with the build quality as well as design of this car inside and out. Very well done. My new favorite BMW.

So anyways it's a 2001 BMW Z8 with 7,000 miles been sitting in storage for a few years and the owner just bought it and wanted it fully perfected and protected. We talked about what that meant and he agreed to what I wanted to do with the car with the addition of undercarriage work.

With no further ado I'll let the pics and write up do the rest of the talking.

Before I got started on anything I wanted to get the undercarriage out of the way. So we drove it up on rhino ramps and squeezed under the car to wash it out.

It was a tight fit but we managed. Basically rinsed it down, then washed it with an old mitt, rerinsed and gave it a good wipe down with some MF towels.

DSC05689.jpg

It was really not very dirty at all, just some water spots and a little grime around the wheel suspension parts but nothing too much.

We finished the back side then flipped the car around and did the front side.

All and all took us about 2 hours.

Next I washed and clayed the entire car and you'd be surprised at how much contamination was on this part. The new owner said he doesn't think it's ever been waxed and I'd have to agree with him as it was pretty nasty for the miles and storage situation.

We cleaned up the interior and then taped it all up to prep it for paint correction.

DSC05704.jpg

Now onto the paint condition.

So now I inspect the paint with my 500W halogens to see the truth.

Can you believe this is a garage queen with only 7K on the ticker and stored most of it's life?? crazy

As I came to learn these swirls were very deep and not as simple as they appear.

DSC05717.jpg

Ok, so you get the picture.

After a pass with Menz SIP, white pad at 1500rpms with the rotary I looked at it and saw this. It was just not cutting the deeper swirls so I needed to step it up a notch.

Here you can see deeper swirls left behind.

DSC05723.jpg

So next I try M105 with a PFW pad (purple foamed wool) at 1500rpms to see how it would cut.

The results were much better but it did leave behind significant buffer trails which I would have to refine.

After M105 and PFW pad.

DSC05727.jpg

Here are a few other pics of the buffer trails/holograms left behind from M105 and PFW pads.

DSC05732.jpg

So after cutting the swirls I went back with Menzerna SIP and a white pad at 1500rpms to refine the buffer trails and here's the results.

Still slightly hazy but the majority of correction is now accomplished.

DSC05740.jpg

DSC05746.jpg

I obviously have removed the tape after the second step was completed.

The next step was simply a jeweling step to enhance the paint even further so I used Menz FPII (final polish II) with a black pad at 1100rpms.

The results were perfection.

I then rewashed it and protected it with my new favorite sealant, Blackfire Wet Diamond.

I applied the sealant with an orbital and a black pad at speed setting 3.

I just showed the 3 step process with the rotary, 1 step cut out swirls but left behind buffer trails, 2 step took out buffer trails, 3 step jeweled the finished for perfect flawless depth and brilliance. Rewash and protection applied.

Of course the interior was dusted, vacuumed, 303 wipe down.

Here are some afters.

Oh yea, even polished behind the license plate.

All and all 19 hours spent from start to finish but it ended up being a 3 step job on the paint and 2 hours of it where spent under the car and about 1 1/2 on the interior.

Some full shots to come.

Next up the 98 Red Diablo Roadster (top off of course)

Josh

Next up is a 98 Red Lamborghini Diablo VT Roadster.

This was a little more basic detail. I performed my Stage 1 Polishing process on it, took about 7 hours total start to finish inside out.

After I washed, clayed and did all the wheels and such I buffed it once over with M105, orange pad at 6000 opm's.

The before and afters are very hard to see, but I'll do my best to show you what I saw.

Basically a bit of hazy paint was all there was on this car, not many swirls and I felt like the paint was really hard as well.

Here's a before of some haziness. (tough to see)

DSC05557.jpg

After M105 with orange on ROB machine.

Cleaner and haze removed.

DSC05563.jpg

The whole car was this way but I just couldn't capture it with my camera due to lighting and color of the car.

So I will have to move onto the after pics.

I rewashed it after the 1 step and then use Blackfire Wet Diamond to protect it.

Interior was dusted, vacuumed, 303 wipe down and Zaino Z10 leather conditioner on all leather.

I think it turned out rather nicely.

Here's me working on the hood.

Stunning work Josh. It's good to see your work again.

Thanks, I enjoy doing the write ups, just not how long they take me.... someday I'm going to do a write up that says, "here are swirls, now they're gone, and here's the car." haha

Josh

Nice work on both, Josh. Really like how the black Z8 came out. :)

Be glad the Diablo was a roadster, cleaning the inside glass on the hardtop is a real pain!

Both vehicles are stunning. The Z8 has instant classic looks and a refined look. The Diablo is still one of the meanest looking cars ever created. Thanks for sharing your beautiful work!

Thanks, yes the glass is a pain to clean, I've done both roadster and hard top and the door panels and all glass is an absolute nightmare to clean... cool car though. ;)
