'96 Pontiac Firebird Formula detail (56K = BOOM)

1 Clean WS6

Detailing Rottweiler
Hey all!!

Every now and then during the course of my work I run into a vehicle that challenges me...this nine year old Formula was such a vehicle. The job was a referral from my good friends (and clients too) at RP Motorsport (www.rpmotorsport.com). They are a local tuner shop here in Marietta with a propensity for making GM's finest GM's fastest. They had recently installed a heads/cam/tune package on this car (made 380's at the wheels) when the owner asked if they knew a good detailer. They gave him my number but told him that I might not take the job because the paint was so bad!! After talking with the owner and talking with the guys at RP the vehicle was brought to their shop for me to work on.

The car has 107K on the odo and without question had had body work and a repaint (possibly the entire car) during the course of its life. Remarkably, just as the owner said, the interior was in great shape. My time on this beast would be spent of the paint...which for a lack of a better word was simply dead. There was no gloss at all and it felt like rubbing your hands on 2500 grit sandpaper over every inch of the car. Never one to shy from a challenge I hunkered down and would not look up until six hours later. Below you will find pics and a description of the detail. Sorry for the enormous number of pics (18 total) but when I was done with the detail I felt like MacArthur after the landing at Inchon...I beat an enemy that thought it could not be beaten.

Enjoy,
Mike

The detail:

Wash with Meg's Gold Class shampoo

Wash with GC again

Polish with Menzerna IP using a LC orange pad and my PC set at 6.

Polish with Menzerna FPII using a LC white pad and my PC set at 6.

Wipe down with Meg's #34.

This is a direct sun before shot. Notice the complete lack of gloss.

Another direct sun before shot. Again no gloss and you can even see some contaminants bonded to the paint.

A poor Clay Magic bar that sacrificed its life to this detail.

I tried taking a few after shots from the same angle...but missed by a long shot!! :o Check out the fish eyes from the repaint in this shot.

Nice job Mike. Looks like you really restored that vehicle well. How long did it end up taking you?
