86 Mr-2

My neighbor has a 1986 Toyota MR2. We used WG pre-clean on it X2 and then used their sealant, then Poor Boys QD. Looks great and he is very happy, but there are a ton of swirls I notice and I want to help him remove them next time we work on it. I was wondering if anyone knew about this cars paint and what might work best and removing these old swirls.

Would 3M SMR work? I have some that is why I ask.

On a side note who ever owned it before him kept the inside flawless, but outside was neglected. This 86â€â„¢s interior looks almost new.

I believe it's single stage paint. I'd probably start out with No. 9 (SMR) with a DA polishing pad.

If that wasn't cutting it, then to their No. 2 (Fine Cut Cleaner) on a rotary with a polishing pad.

If that wasn't working, then I go to DACP with a cutting pad.

Since the paint wasn't looked after very well and it's quite old, I'd be very very careful in addressing the swirls. It's probably pretty thin so be careful.

Make it look better but it's probably not worth trying to get a perfect finish.

I wouldn't go above DACP unless you are able to do get a paint thickness gauge and see what you have to deal with.

Has it ever been repainted?
