8 year old Black BMW 740iL Back to Showroom New

This 2000 740iL with 100/k miles had the usual swirls but nothing heavy (didn't wet sand a single area). BUT (big but)...the paint "fought" me for the correct product. Wool was too harsh even with different products. So, I double compounded with foam (3M cutting pad on the Dynabrade): Extra Cut to start and changed pads to Perfect-It 3000 on another cutting pad. That really helped. The dealer wanted his usual 3M Dark Glaze and it didn't produce the "pop" I was looking for. So, I had some Adams Revive and used that with a glaze pad which really deepened the black. Followed by Ultrafina SE, then 3M Performance Finished burnished with a rotary and finish pad. The result is one of the deepest black paints I have ever achieved.

Outside. It was a shame the sun didn't shine (spitting snow today in KC). Maybe I can grab a few sun pics Monday before the customer picks up the car...this sold as I was finishing

How much value did you just add to that 7? I would think at least 5K!

Amazing work as aways!

Actually, the car is going out in the teens price wise. The dealer really doesn't add mark up just because I recon it. His reputation is having the nicest used Bimmers and the referrals keep him going just fine. I personally like the comments from prospective buyers when they say they've never seen a car that well detailed.

Toto

They speak the truth as you do awesome work Toto! I hope you get a chance to get a sun shot or two

Wow, that looks great! One of the best turnarounds I've seen!

Performance Finish is 3ms new sealant, right? So you worked it with a finishing pad like a polish to "burnish" the paint?

So, even after 100k miles, no sanding was needed on the headlight housings and clear portion of the tails? The headlights on an '00 740i OEM sport that I worked on last summer required significant sanding. It had about the same mileage also. Very similar, shorter with different corner lights & tail lights, but the same facelifted headlights.

If you did refinish those areas, what is your preferred procedure? My sanding was extensive, on the front anyways.

Regarding the prospective buyer's comments, I'm surprised they even noticed at all. Most of the time people just think it's been very well taken care of unless you tell them otherwise. Smart guy, whoever said that. He seems to know a thing or two about our efforts. :waxing: :usa

Looks great. That's funny, I had that same problem with the product selection on an 89 5series I did today. It had the usual swirling, inalyed with some deeper ones, and it took me like 30 minutes to get a good pad/product combo. Ended up going with OC and a white lc(wasn't going for %100) to get it up to about 85%.

Frito Yes, I use a finish pad with the 3M Performance Finish. I've also tried this burnishing process with Zaino Z2, Meg's M21, Wolfgang Deep Gloss Sealant, and a few others. I keep the rotary speed around 1,200 and work the product until it disappears. I don't buff anything with a microfiber until I'm finished and I use a little QD and light buffing to catch any haze I might have missed.

charlesaferg Oooooops...ya caught me on the headlights! I did hit them with 600 grit + 2000 grit + compound on a 3" wool pad for the air rotary pistol. The taillights get compounded when I do that area and I've never had the need to sand tail lights before.

I "suspect" the front bumper was repainted prior to me getting the car...usually BMW's get peppered on the front bumper with far fewer miles. It was really unusual not to have any wet sanding painted areas to do on such a high mileage car. The prior owner used it as an executive travel car and zero children have ever graced the inside LOL.

The prospective buyer was pretty sharp on appearance and maintenance questions. Good, knowledgeable buyer that I answered his appearance questions. He's looking at trading in a nice 5 Series that he maintains and it shows well.

Ryan Yep...there is a difference in paints from BMW that's for sure. I just finished a Black 2002 330Ci with wool that turned out fantastic and figured this would too. But, 2 model years earlier had made a difference. Wool just would not "finish down" correctly and looked a mess! A switch to foam did the work immediately.

[Insert usual :bow regarding Totoland Mach's work]

Totoland Mach- So you were using the Dyanabrade for the intitial correction? With 3M Extra Cut? Huh, that's a new one for me
