6.5" vs 7.5" pad selection

Can't seem to find any past threads on this. Any pro's or con's other than cost on 6.5" vs. 7.5" pads ? The larger pad will waste a bit more product but other than that, .....am I better off going with 7.5"

I can then *cross use* the pads between my DA and rotary.

Of course you can use both of them on DA/rotary, but I can't quite remember what the general opinion is on 6.5" versus 7.5" pads.

One thing that I know is that larger pads will cover more area, but conversely will be less maneuverable in tight areas. Other than that I don't believe that they have any inherent disadvantage and people use them just the same as the 6.5" ones.

HTH

I agree with 4DSC. The advantage of the 7.5" pad besides being maneuverable is that there is more padding between the backplate and the car surface.

Some people found the 7.5" pad vibrated too much for their taste. Didn't bother me, though.

Another approach might be to use the smaller 6-6.5" pads on both the PC and the rotary. I like them BETTER than the larger pads when used on my Makita. There are numerous sizes of plates for both machines, I found it worthwhile to try different ones.

On my PC I switched to the 7.5 pads and love them. They seem to be built better and are more heavier duty. My 6" pads have not been touched since.

Another advantage to the 7.5 inch pads, someone pointed this out to me in a previous thread, is that the edge of the pad is farther away from the body of the PC. So although you are using a bigger pad you can actually get into tight spots better without the body of the PC getting in the way. An example of this would be under the mirror or a rear spoiler.

SteveT- Think that might've been me. Heh heh, guess I can argue "which pad size" from both sides! Maybe that's why I have so many :D

I only have the Megs 6 or 6.5 inch pads and the 5 inch backing plate. I am going to order some 7.5 inch pads and the 6 inch plate and some 3.5 inch or is it 4 inch pads from CMA and the 3 inch plate. I should be able to handle any situation with this variety of pads.:D

I have the PC 7336, it came with the 6 inch counterweight.:D Don't know if the 3 inch plate and pads will require a 5 inch weight? I will see how smooth it runs with the 6 inch weight. If it vibrates too much I may need the 5 inch weight.

I couldn't locate my 5" counterweight  :( so I just used the 6" one. It seemed to work fine, even with the small 3" plate, but see what you think.

I use the 6" counter weight on my PC

I use 7.5" pads for large surface areas like the hood, roof and trunk. I also do most of the door panels too.

For the bottom rocker panels, door frame around the windows and other tight spots I use the 6.5" pads. I find if I use the 7.5 pads for tighter spots and hit the trim, I get black dirt on my pad. That's if I'm lazy and don't mask off the trim!

So I use both when I detail a car.

The 7.5" tufted foam finger pads are on sale at premiumautocare.com !!! I loaded up on the hard to find orange tufted. I also picked up some more yellow and white too.

They're also great for the rotary!
