Hello there!

I have to do a BMW M6 tomorrow with moderate swirling..

The products that my work keep in stock (don't want to use personal products) are -

3M perfect it rubbing, machine, & ultrafine polishing compounds.

Wizard's Finish Cut

ALL Griot's Products

Meguiar's Ultimate Compound-- I know, I know, its OTC

Hardware -

CG blue finesse pad

CG black finishing pad

Makita 9227c

Griot's Random Orbital w/orange & red pads

We just ordered a ton of CG pads with a new flex rotary..3403

I did a few test spots with the makita, a finishing pad and 3M machine polish...

Not really getting the results I want..

Any suggestions on BMW clears? Should I be using more aggressive products/pads?

Thanks for all of your feedback!

thomasautocare- Welcome to Autopia!

There are others here with a ton more experience with BMWs than I have, but IMO *which* BMW paint the M6 has is pretty critical. BMWs can have either incredibly hard or stupid-soft clear, and as best I can tell a lot are in between those extremes. At least it sounds like the one you're doing isn't extremely soft.

FWIW, the 3M stuff I use is the older PI-III like and I'm guessing you have the newer version. Still, IMO a finishing pad and their Machine Polish is a pretty mild combo. Even their regular RC (as opposed to the Extra Cut version) is pretty mild (I actually have this PI-3000 line product). Via rotary, with a cutting pad, it *might* do OK, but you might even do about as well with that Meguiar's UC, even if it is an OTC/consumer product. The Griot's orange polishing pad is good, but IMO too gentle for what you're likely to need for the aggressive work.

I'd only be considering the Griot's Machine Polishes for finishing out via PC if necessary. And then I'd just use the MP3 or maybe even MP4 if you have it, just to add a bit of extra gloss. But you might do OK just using the rotary and your 3M UltraFine, if your rotary skills are good enough.

Thanks for your reply Accumulator.

Yeah it worked out well actually.

Our shipment of CG pads arrived today, so I used an orange cutting pad with the 9227c with 3M Rubbing Compound (new version).

Then 3M machine polish on 9227c with black finishing CG pad.

Then Ultrafine 3M polish on 9227c with blue finesse CG pad.

It was the black sapphire metallic paint. It was really hard. Lol!

Came out looking really clean though, no marring or hazing of anykind.

I'm happy with the results!

My coworker will be topping it off with wax tom..

Thanks for your feedback!

thomasautocare- Glad it turned out so well, intersting that the 3M compound/orange had enough cut for you, but hey...lucky you! Nice that somebody here besides yours truly is still using something from 3M besides the oh-so-popular Ultrafina!
