Would you suggest using this stuff by hand? If so should I apply it in a circular motion or up and down in straight lines?
 
If you're going to use a swirl remover by hand, I would suggest #9. You can use 3M SMR by hand, but it has fewer oils and fillers than #9, and is more effective by machine.



If you're doing this by hand, use linear motions, not circular. More difficult to introduce new swirls that way.
 
It depends if you are doing the entire car or just spot jobs, if doing the entire car you can not get an even look doing it by hand, must use an orbital buffer.



But just for spot jobs, by hand is fine.
