3M SMR over Zaino?

Spent quite some time getting rid of swirls: JPS anti-swirl measures

But some are coming back. I have about 14 coats of Zaino Z5/Z2, and my question is this:

Can I use some 3M SMR to sort of touch up, as long as I wash with Dawn afterwards to get the SMR oils off before putting more Z on, and if so, what is the effect to the underlying Zaino?

Thanks,

Won't the SMR cut all the Z off? Forget the Dawn - it is pretty harsh stuff and might trash your Z.

I'm pretty sure the SMR if abrasive will cut the Zaino .. and as far as Dawn goes .. it will not bother the Zaino and is about the only option to prep the area that you touched up. If you use AIO it will lift any Zaino that remains.

Have you tried a couple of layers of Z5?

When you say .. the swirls are coming back.. you mean they are being induced? .. Maybe your washing/drying protocol needs adjusting.

You might also think about the Menzerna polishes for touchups as it is water based and has no oils or fillers and you can pretty well go straight to Zaino after.

I read your JPS anti-swirl measures and I didn't read all of the rest of the additional posts but one comment I need to make.. With the Z5 the instructions state it needs to be applied in a straight motion not circular. The PC can't do it in a srtaight line. This works .. I know from my own error applying Z5 .. I wasted 3 good layers doing it wrong with little satisfaction. Once I clued into doing it in straight lines Z5 actually did fill/hide minor swirls.

I'll try Z5 by hand. And swirls might not be the best description for what is coming back...more like microscratches impossible to avoid when washing and such, esp when scrubbing bugs that were impacted at 125 mph on the track.

BTW...Since Z is a synthetic polymer, Dawn doesn't cut it down.

Thanks,

SMR will take it down to bare paint, so you'll have to start all over. Z5 sounds like the best solution. You might find, as many others have, that the marring is in the Z layers, and Z5 will fix it right up.

I was always under the impression that The Dawn wash would take off all the Z. I always assumed that you would Dawn wash when you were ready to "Start all over again".

INTERCOOLED:

Your impression was incorrect. As noted above, Dawn will remove wax (and grease), and is thus used to prep a car for the first application of Zaino, but it will not remove the Zaino itself.

To start all over again you would have to remove all the Zaino, and I think you use an alcohol based solution to do that. I've never had any reason to want to remove all the Zaino, so I'm not sure about that, but directions are noted somewhere on the Zaino Brothers web pages.

AIO or a polish or an alcohol soulution will lift Zaino but the Dawn wash won't .. per squidd & Sal ( I have the e-mail ) ... Dawn isn't a good habit cuz it said to be a little harsh on the rubber components but seeing its only on the car for a very short period and rinsed off and only done maybe a couple times a year I haven't and you won't see rubber issues. I'm sure if you washed your car 3 times a week in it things could get a little tense.

With that many layers of Zaino on......your micro marring is probably not in the paint but in the zaino layers. A fresh layer should even it out. Try that first and lets us know how you make out
